Overview:
The Data Engineer I is a key technical resource for Alterman’s data pipelines and helps contextualize and provide easy access to data for the entire organization. The Data Engineer I designs, builds, and deploys data solutions that capture, explore, transform, and utilize data to support and drive business initiatives.
Essential Functions:
1. 90%
- Constructs new data pipelines and optimizes existing ones to ensure resiliency and scalability.
- Designs data models for optimized reporting.
- Creates complex views specific for various operations groups.
- Creates Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) jobs from various data sources.
- Assists data team with data initiatives and automation needs.
- Maintains and enforces best practices with regards to data source control and queries.
- Contributes to data catalogs and dictionaries.
- Tests and debugs ELT functions.
2. Performs other duties as assigned. 10%
Education and Experience:
- 2 years of related experience engineering and operationalizing data pipelines within a cloud environment required.
- 2 years of related experience with ELT and Data Warehousing required.
- Experience with Azure DevOps and Snowflake required.
- Experience with SQL required; Python preferred for light transformations and automation.
- Experience with data engineering best practices for development required, including query optimization, version control, code reviews and documentation.
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to translate the stories found in the data.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Statistical modeling and/or data visualizations skills preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, or other related software.
- Proficient in SQL and/or Python.
- Familiarity with data quality, lineage, and cataloging practices.
- Awareness of data governance and security (RBAC/roles, object tags, masking, RAPS).
- Able to learn corporate processes, standards, and technologies.
- Able to work adaptively and collaboratively.
- Able to cross-train with other system owners and administrators to ensure adequate coverage across platforms.

- Manual dexterity associated with computer data entry required.
