RECREATION THERAPY AIDE

PER COUNTY RULES: THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT AT STEP 1, $54,038.40 ANNUALLY. County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for Step Placement in Accordance with Compensation Ordinance 1.3.5.

Future Salary Increases:

** June 2026 – 6.07% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + 2.57% Market Adjustment)

** June 2027 – 5.57% increase to base pay (3% Across-the- Board + 2.57% Market Adjustment)

There is an additional location premium of 5% when principal assignment is at the County of San Diego Psychiatric Hospital. 

Current vacancy is for San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital. The San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital is located at 3853 Rosecrans Street, San Diego, CA 92110, however the eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in HHSA at Edgemoor Distinct Part-Skilled Nursing Facility (DP/SNF) located in San Diego's East County suburb of Santee, 655 Park Center Drive, Santee, CA 92071.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL 
The San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital (SDCPH) is a publicly funded, free-standing psychiatric hospital.  It is a locked facility and a component of the San Diego County Behavioral Health Services' continuum of care.  The mission of the Hospital is to provide psychiatric evaluation and crisis intervention-oriented acute treatment for adult residents of San Diego County.  The goal of the Hospital is to help stabilize patients' behavioral health crisis, and move ahead to a less restrictive level of care.

EDGEMOOR DISTINCT PART-SKILLED NURSING FACILITY
The Edgemoor facility provides 24-hour long term skilled nursing care for individuals having complex medical needs who require specialized interventions from highly trained staff. It is a FIVE STAR facility, having received this highest rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and a perfect score for nearly two years. It has been named yearly as one of the top nursing facilities in the USA by US News and World Report since 2012. The facility has been on a Baldridge quality journey which has involved the actions of each staff member. Over the last seven years, the facility earned the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards for excellence in quality. Of note, since 1996 only 34 facilities in the USA out of 15,600 facilities nationwide have earned this extremely prestigious award.  Edgemoor is a restraint free, smoke free facility and has exceptionally high- quality measures..

Recreation Therapy Aides assist Recreational Therapists with planning, organizing, documenting, and implementing recreational activities for patients such as special events, field trips, and other physical, social, cognitive, and spiritual activities. Bilingual ability is highly desirable, but not required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. One (1) year of full-time experience equivalent to a Recreation Therapy Aide with the County of San Diego in a recreation therapy department or rehabilitation setting, for example: Recreation Therapy Aide, Activity Assistant, Activity Director; OR,
  2. One (1) year of full-time experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant in a setting where providing recreational activities to patients was part of regularly assigned duties; and, at least six (6) units of college level course work in recreational therapy or a field related to recreation administration or successful completion of an approved 40-hour Activity Director Certification Course; OR,
  3. Thirty (30) completed units of college level course work from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, at least nine (9) of these units must have been in recreational therapy or a field related to recreation administration. 

Note: Successful completion of an approved 40-hour Activity Director Certification course is highly desirable.


License

A valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment or the ability to arrange transportation for field travel. Employees in this class may be required to use their own vehicle.

In some positions; a valid California Class B driver's license is required within six (6) months of hire and must be maintained throughout employment in this class.

INTERVIEWS AND HIRING PROCESS 

Interviews will be held week of November 10, 2025. Job offers for selected candidates will be made shortly after the interviews. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. 
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. 
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
 

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process. 
 

EVALUATION PROCESS

The names of qualified candidates will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
