It starts with YES!
At Optus, we have an ambitious goal to be Australia’s most loved everyday brand.
The IP and Transport Network team is responsible for end-to-end management of IP core platforms within the Network Engineering department. This includes lifecycle planning, growth initiatives, strategic projects, cybersecurity compliance, and performance monitoring to support all Optus service streams—Fixed, Mobile, and Enterprise—making it critical to the company’s revenue streams. The role involves acting as a domain prime, managing platform engineering planning and execution, reviewing design solutions, and ensuring production network success. Hands-on experience with Cisco, Nokia, and Juniper routers, along with knowledge of international and peering technologies, is highly desirable
As a senior engineering role, this position requires developing subject matter expertise and providing leadership to junior engineers. The successful candidate will operate independently, guiding complex technical solutions, managing contractors and vendors, and collaborating across multiple internal teams to deliver key projects. This is a high-impact role that combines technical depth, problem-solving, and leadership to ensure robust and future-ready IP platforms.
What you’ll be doing
- Plan and deliver end-to-end IP core network builds, upgrades, and expansions, including cost-benefit analysis and implementation planning.
- Proactively manage capacity, develop infrastructure upgrade plans, and consolidate legacy platforms to enhance customer experience.
- Lead project meetings, guide stakeholders, support sourcing initiatives, and maintain strong relationships to resolve issues effectively.
- Prepare investment and AOP plans, monitor project progress, produce reporting, and take proactive action to avoid network exceptions.
- Provide technical expertise, recommendations, and strategy input while mentoring junior engineers and delivering training where required.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, balance technical and financial requirements, and translate complex solutions for varied audiences.
What makes you perfect for the role?
- 15+ years in telecommunications, including 10+ years in IP network engineering roles.
- Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (or related field) with Cisco/Juniper/Nokia certifications desirable.
- Strong hands-on experience in router configuration, network planning, and telecommunications provider environments.
- In-depth knowledge of Segment Routing, IPv4/v6, TCP/IP, routing/switching, MPLS, traffic engineering, and modern datacentre technologies
- Skilled in project and budget management, documentation, and network automation tools (Ansible, Python), with strong stakeholder engagement experience.
