The Spot Trader and Operator is part of Iberdrola Australia’s Operations Control Centre which is responsible for the real-time dispatch, monitoring, analysis and performance reporting of Iberdrola Australia’s growing generation fleet of renewable energy and firming assets, with a strong focus on short-term optimisation working with an expanding customer portfolio.
Since its establishment in 2011, Iberdrola’s Operations Control Centre has had a front row seat in Australia’s energy transition. Over this time Iberdrola Australia has expanded its position as a retailer to large customers within the NEM, while also adding over 1GW of wind, solar, gas turbine and battery energy storage systems to the portfolio. As the industry evolves, the Control Centre has been at the forefront of market and policy developments as Australia’s power system seeks to integrate large volumes of VRE and facilitate thermal exit, interacting with and understanding operational challenges and trends as they emerge.
Physical Market Activities
- Trade in the spot market for wind, solar, gas, and battery assets across the NEM, working with different bidding platforms.
- Manage risk associated with volatility in the electricity and ancillary service markets (FCAS).
- Analyse and understand the behaviour of competitors operating within our traded markets.
- Optimise the purchase and sale of fuel for peaking assets.
- Understand the impact of transmission and dispatch constraints within the National Electricity Market (NEM) and minimise the impact they have on the assets.
- Provide guidance and advice to the business on spot market dynamics in the NEM including plant and network outages, constraints and other market outcomes.
- Liaise with AEMO and network operators on an ongoing basis across markets and operations, focused on potential impacts on Iberdrola’s assets.
Monitoring and Issue Management
- Monitor assets using various systems including SCADA, meteorological and electricity market systems and the maintenance management system.
- Identify and assess issues impacting plant availability.
- Manage and escalate issues in line with operating protocols and market conditions.
- Track major events and coordinate communication between the business, site teams and key stakeholders.
- Know each site’s maintenance plan to understand events taking place and ensure operational and energy market’s expectations are aligned.
Analysis and Reporting
- Report and inform the business on Australian short-term energy market trends.
- Work on building and improving in-house tools to improve real-time decision making.
- Undertake regular analysis on portfolio performance, market drivers, competitor behaviour and other spot market dynamics.
- Maintain and validate operational records and events for reporting purposes.
- Work with O&M teams to help identify and implement changes to improve asset performance.
More about the role
This role works on a continuous 24/7 roster cycle shared within the team. There is a combination of 12hr trading shifts, rostered time off, 9-5 project days, and built-in and flexible leave.
About You
You are a tertiary graduate with qualification from a STEM and/or Commerce background and you seek or have experience:
- Spot trading in the NEM
- Working in the Energy sector
- Working with established trading systems and market data systems
- Working with database queries such as SQL, Power Query/BI, Python
- Working in an operations-focused role, dealing with SCADA systems
- Analysing Australian energy market dynamics
