Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and is looking for a full-time Principal Investigator. The Principal Investigator (PI) selects and develops staff in the conducts of funded research in the area of mechanisms of chronic pain, and post traumatic stress disorder and other veteran-related disorders such as Gulf War Illness. The PI takes full technical responsibility for interpreting findings and judging their applicability to the activities and interests of VA research.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Independent Research
- Independently directs and analyzes results of experiments to study mechanisms of chronic pain, post traumatic pain
- Formulates hypotheses and experimental designs
- Analyzes test results, using statistical techniques, and evaluates significance of data in relation to original hypothesis.
Research Collaboration
- Collaborates with other scientists in the laboratory and external collaborators in such fields as anesthesiology, physiology, neurology, statistics, and other related fields. Collaboration will include faculty, staff, and students at Stanford University and VAPAHCS.
- Interacts regularly with clinicians and / or other researchers – both locally and through attendance at scientific meetings.
- Participates and leads committees as necessary
Staff Leadership / Management
- Trains, coaches and supervises others (such as research assistants, postdoctoral fellows, etc.), which may include to direct and advise personnel in special experiments or test procedures.
- Recommends measures to improve methods, performance, and quality of research.
- Oversees staff to ensure research process follows applicable VA rules and regulations, avoiding compliance issues.
Research Dissemination
- Writes papers describing experiments and interpreting test results for publication in peer reviewed journals
- Presents findings at scientific meetings
- Other tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Ph.D.;
- At least 2 years of related experience as a Principal Investigator;
- Minimum of 20 years of experience beyond postdoctoral fellowship, including independent research in areas related to pain research;
- Solid theoretical and practical background in Mechanisms of chronic pain, post traumatic pain
- Demonstrated experience publishing qualitative and quantitative research results as a first author in refereed scientific journals
- Preferred: Degree in Psychiatry or related field;
- Experience in developing and writing successful peer reviewed grant proposals, and directing and conducting funded research projects
- Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct inter- and intra-departmental committee work
- Demonstrated, effective staff coaching and leadership skills
- Demonstrated interest and experience in bridging research results to clinical care
- Experienced in the research process and able to transfer scientific knowledge to practical applications;
- Proven technical, analytical skills;
- Excellent oral, written and computer communication skills;
- High degree of scientific creativity;
- Ability to comply with VA rules and regulations;
- Ability to work independently and be a team player;
- Effective communication skills; established clear, scientific writing style.
