Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Manager, Clinical Engineering manages operations and personnel involved in the repair, maintenance and construction of medical equipment. This position works closely with the Director to sustain and grow programs and services. The Manager oversees administrative functions to ensure smooth and efficient operations of the department. This position interfaces with hospital personnel as a consultant, special project engineer, in-service instructor, and department shop repair coordinator, and holds the Datacaptor Administrator role for the organization’s Middleware as it pertains to the EPIC EMR system.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

•    Assists Director with the development and administration of policies and procedures; acts as department head in Director’s absence
•    Ensures safety as related to medical equipment and its use, to include: performs acceptance inspection for new equipment, performs safety inspections from borrowed and/or rented equipment, performs scheduled safety and operational inspection of current inventory, follows appropriate sterile procedures
•    Responsible for performance indicators for operations, regulatory and accreditation, and associated reports 
•    Responsible for product recall and alert assignment and oversight; responds to medical device incident investigations
•    Attends or assigns environment of care rounds
•    Responsible for computerized medical equipment maintenance and software data integrity
•    Coordinates project assignments, successfully prioritizing tasks in consideration of deadlines; prioritizes and assigns medical equipment repairs, preventive maintenance and fabrication to department staff for completion and supervises day-to-day operations
•    Performs designated administrative duties to include: Kronos Time System Management, On-Base Application and SAP Ordering and Approval Management
•    Provides direct/indirect supervision of personnel in Biomedical Engineering, including all personnel actions including hiring, employee counseling, evaluations, disciplines, and terminations with oversight from the Director
•    Provides special project designs and applications as requested by department heads, medical staff, etc.
•    Represents Eskenazi Health in negotiations with biomedical equipment companies for evaluation and/or purchase of biomedical equipment
•    Works with medical staff on research projects (i.e., software development for clinical application, clinical equipment modification, alarm system design, medical device data aggregation build and support etc.)
•    Data mines information in the medical equipment lifecycle management process
•    Advises department head concerning equipment purchases that best suit their needs; advises on new medical equipment technology and is considered a technology manager for medical equipment systems
•    Provides in-service instruction to hospital personnel on proper usage of biomedical electronic equipment
•    Manages personnel for emergency call-ins to correct equipment problems; assigns or manages delegation of on-call, house call, and room preventative maintenance rotation schedules
•    Coordinates preventive maintenance programs for Biomedical Engineering Department
•    Assures proper organization and/or acquisition of shop supplies
•    Responsible for staff orientation, competency and overall coordination of department education
•    Works with Information Security Officer to understand HIPPA and ePHI requirements and ensures compliance for Biomedical Engineering staff; coordinates medical device cyber security program
 

Job Requirements

•    Bachelor’s degree in a related area of engineering and 3 years of progressive experience in the Biomedical Engineering field OR
•    Completion of an associate’s degree in biomedical engineering and on-going evidence of continuing education in pursuit of bachelor’s degree along with 4 years of biomedical service experience.
•    Certification preferred – CHTM, CBET, CCE
•    Understands HL7, MDIL coding as it relates to build and support of hospital middleware
•    High degree of technical expertise required for decisions related to the repair and design of medical equipment, tools to use and when to arrange for outside help
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; ability to read and interpret various charts and graphs
