Principal API Platform Engineer – Lamina
Lamina is seeking a Principal API Platform Engineer to join our Banking Technology team. We are a fast-growing FinTech company that is transforming how banks participate in and syndicate commercial loans. Our platform integrates with both Loan Origination Systems (LOS) and Loan Accounting Systems (LAS), streamlining data flow across the banking ecosystem.
As a Principal API Platform Engineer, you will drive the strategy, design, and development of our external API platform. You will architect scalable, secure, and observable APIs that enable banks to build custom integrations with Lamina. This role combines platform architecture, developer experience, and deep integration expertise. You will also build internal tooling that empowers both our clients and internal teams to integrate and operate with confidence.
Responsibilities
• Lead the design, development, and versioning of Lamina’s external APIs supporting integration with bank-hosted systems (LoanIQ, AFS, CLS).
• Define API governance standards including schema validation, version control, rate limiting, and security (OAuth2, API keys, mTLS).
• Architect and manage API gateway infrastructure to monitor traffic, enforce policy, and support scalable partner access.
• Build and maintain internal tools for API payload debugging, request replay, schema diffing, and log observability.
• Collaborate with other Banking Technology team members to support external client teams during integration development and testing.
• Own the internal sandbox environments, test harnesses, and mock services to support bank-side development.
• Help guide product decisions and API roadmap in partnership with Banking Technology Product Lead.
• Enable automated testing pipelines and ensure consistent quality across releases.
Skills & Requirements
• Technical Expertise:
o 7+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years focused on designing and building partner-facing APIs.
o Deep experience with RESTful API design, JSON schema, OpenAPI/Swagger, and Postman.
o Strong backend development skills in Node.js, Python, or Java.
o Experience managing APIs using platforms such as Kong, Apigee, or AWS API Gateway.
o Knowledge of authentication and security standards such as OAuth2, JWT, and mTLS.
o Familiarity with integration patterns (batch, event-driven, polling) and tooling for schema validation and observability.
o Experience working with or building APIs that connect to enterprise platforms like LoanIQ, AFS, or CLS is highly preferred.
• Platform & Tooling Expertise:
o Experience building internal developer tools, integration health dashboards, replay utilities, and test harnesses.
o Familiarity with API lifecycle tooling and partner-facing onboarding assets (e.g., sample payloads, Postman collections).
• Leadership & Collaboration:
o Strong sense of ownership with ability to drive cross-functional collaboration across engineering, product, and solutions.
o Client-facing mindset with comfort supporting external bank teams and resolving integration issues.
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in translating complex technical issues into clear, actionable insights.
o Desire to operate in a fast-paced, startup environment with high autonomy.
o Excited to shape the future of Lamina’s integration infrastructure and technical tooling.
o Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a highly motivated team.
• Bonus Points:
o Prior experience working on integration-heavy platforms in the FinTech or B2B SaaS space.
o Strong understanding of core banking or financial systems integration is a plus.
o Experience working with or integrating into Loan Accounting Systems (LoanIQ, AFS, CLS)
