POSITION TITLE: Education Advisor I and Education Advisor II

CLASSIFICATION:   Non-Exempt 

DEPARTMENT:  Education

SUPERVISOR: Education Coordinator 

GRADE:  NE10 $19.36 ($40,270) - $29.04 ($60,405) Education Advisor I

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, the Educational Advisor I is responsible for coordinating with parents, teachers, counselors, principals and other school district staff to assist Native American/Alaska Native students enrolled in the public school system or other approved alternative education program(s) in obtaining academic advancement toward an accredited high school diploma or the approved GED equivalency; assists Native American students in identifying educational opportunities that foster academic and developmental growth. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Provides academic support to Native American/Alaska Native students with identified needs inside and outside the classroom under direct supervision of a classroom teacher.

· Responsible for advocacy in the prescribed education plan to ensure representation by all parties. Attends IEP meetings as assigned.

· Coordinates information and meetings between teachers, tutors, counselors, and parents regarding student’s progress in the school system.

· Assists each student to advance grade levels through the day school program and will work with the student and family to develop an educational plan to ensure optimal growth in each developmental area.

· Schedules monthly conferences with each student during the school year with additional conferences scheduled as needed.

· Maintains written, confidential records that includes student progress, developmental deficiencies, attendance and academic standing. 

· Updates annually, Native American student lists for the assigned school(s). 

· Obtains 506 Forms and enrollment documents from each Native American student served.

· Assists with student enrollment in afterschool programming to ensure that students and families are aware of options for assignment completion, credit recovery (9-12th grade), testing and college planning.

· Makes referrals to social services of children considered to be at a high risk due to an unsatisfactory home life or poor educational performance as a result of a serious problem.

· Assists in coordination of local educational workshops and field trips and transports and chaperons students as needed.

· Coordinates and assists in the annual awards ceremony recognizing Native American Students achievement. 

· Provides information to parents to ensure and maintain interest in the student’s academics.

· Provides written monthly reports to area supervisor in a timely manner.

Additional Duties: Education Advisor II 

· Schedules and conducts home visits with students as assigned. 

· Orient and familiarize families to area resources (both tribal and non-tribal).

· Attends educational committee meetings as required.

· Coordinates culturally relevant extracurricular activities as assigned.

· Schedules and co-facilitates Student Assistance Program (SAP) groups for at-risk Native American students as assigned. 

· Chaperones students and/or families to regional and national education related summits and conferences.

· Leads after school programming for at assigned site and/or assigned community. 

· Collaborates with Education Lead and Education Coordinator in curriculum development and lesson planning.

· Implements curriculum and lessons in the after school, holiday and summer program.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION ADVISOR I:

· Minimum 12-15 credits in Education or related field with one year experience working with students in tutoring or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

· Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment. 

· Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy. 

· Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

· Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:

· Knowledge of Washoe Tribe, culture and morals.

· Knowledge of integrated functions of academic counseling and general student services.

· Knowledge of a range of student life issues and concerns.

· Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

· Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

· Ability to provide student career and/or academic guidance.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality.

· Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, employees and officials

· Ability to work independently and efficiently under stressful conditions, make solid decisions, and exercise independent judgment.

· Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.

· Ability to effectively maintain and respect all levels of confidentially relating to Native American students and their records as it pertains to the Education Departments, local school districts, the Washoe Communities and the Washoe Tribal staff.

· Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.

· Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

· Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.

· Skill in planning and organizing activities.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level. 

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

  • Negative alcohol and drug screen
  • Meet requirements of Public Law 101-630
  • Obtain or possess a valid driver’s license for either the state      of Nevada or California within 30 days
  • Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe’s driving policy
