Hours of Job

  • Full Time - 8 hours per day between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

  • Flexible hours with potential for remote work.

  • Immediate remote option for in-state residents with coding experience. Must reside in the state of Ohio.

  • No Weekends or Holidays Required

Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Physician Practice Coder will assign ICD10 and CPT codes for physician office visits and hospital-based visits, for family practice and specialty providers.

  • Coding office is responsible for 35+ providers.

  • This position evaluates medical records and assigns appropriate clinical diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines.

  • Accurately codes diagnostic and procedural information in accordance with national coding guidelines and appropriate reimbursement requirements.

  • Works collaboratively with physicians, practice managers, and offices; to capture complete and accurate documentation to assure that the appropriate diagnosis and procedure coding has been assigned; to communicate the principles and importance of documentation improvement to members of the healthcare team; and to serves as a resource on coding related issues. 

  • Consults with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and to determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.

  • Provides thorough, timely and accurate assignments of ICD and/or CPT codes.

  • Prompt physicians regarding missing, unclear, or conflicting medical record documentation and obtain additional documentation within the medical record when needed. 

  • Works independently under regular supervision. 

  • May seek guidance for correct interpretation of coding guidelines and LCDs (Local Coverage Determinations)

Requirements

  • Must demonstrate a level of knowledge and understanding of ICD and CPT coding principles as recommended by the American Health Information Management Association coding competencies, and as normally demonstrated by certification by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

  • Must be able to work effectively with electronic medical record software, coding software (encoder), and scrubber software.

  • Strong analytical skills. 

  • Demonstrated aptitude for quantitative analysis and attention to detail. 

Education/Certifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.

  • Prefer formal training in medical record keeping principles and practices, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, standard nomenclature, and classification of diagnoses and operations, or an associate degree in a related health care field.

  • Prefer applicant has a coding certification (CPC, CCA, CCS, CCS-P or RHIT or RHIA in active status) and ideally looking for someone with at least 2 years of current physician practice coding experience.

  • Will consider experience in lieu of certification/degree.

Experience

  • Preferred 2 years physician practice coding experience.
