General Statement of Duties
Under general supervision, the EC Teacher (OCS) provides specially designed instruction for students with disabilities following the Occupational Course of Study pathway. The teacher supports the development of academic, functional, and vocational skills aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promoting successful transition to adulthood, community participation, and employment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and IEP Implementation
- Develops, implements, and monitors IEPs for students in the OCS program.
- Provides direct instruction in academic, functional life, and vocational skills.
- Employs evidence-based instructional practices and differentiated strategies to meet student needs.
- Uses assessment data to inform instruction and adjust IEP goals as appropriate.
Transition and Work-Based Learning
- Coordinates and supervises community-based and work-based learning experiences.
- Collaborates with families, job coaches, and employers to promote student success in the workplace.
- Collects and maintains accurate records of student progress, work hours, and required documentation.
Classroom and Behavior Management
- Maintains an organized, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Implements positive behavior interventions and supports.
- Uses de-escalation strategies as needed
- Supports students with personal care and self-help needs when required
Collaboration and Communication
- Acts as case manager for assigned students.
- Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and transition planning.
- Consults with community service providers, therapists, and school personnel to meet student needs.
- Participates in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
Compliance and Professionalism
- Maintains confidentiality of all student records and information.
- Ensures compliance with state and federal laws governing special education services.
- Completes documentation and data collection requirements (including MAC random moment studies).
- Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional growth.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of disabilities and their impact on learning and employment readiness.
- Understanding of OCS curriculum standards and transition planning.
- Ability to deliver instruction in functional academics and vocational readiness.
- Proficiency in developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs.
- Strong classroom management and behavior intervention skills.
- Skill in using instructional technology and assistive devices.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and community partners.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and supporting student dignity.
- Ability to maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Required: North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Exceptional Children: General Curriculum.
- Preferred: Experience or training in the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) program.
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
