Job Summary

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of severely handicapped students in a classroom; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; assist students in developing various self-help, social and community skills.

Salary Info

Hourly rate corresponds to various Para Educator titles on CSEA Classified Regular Salary Schedule for the 2024/25 School Year. Please note: Initial placement is restricted to a maximum of Step 3 for external applicants.

TYPES OF CLASSES: Autism, Community School, Counseling Enriched, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Independent Study, Juvenile Hall, Learning Handicapped, Life Skills, Multiple Handicapped, Physically Handicapped, Resource, Severely Handicapped, Special Day Class, Specialized Services, Transitions, 1:1 Assignment (Working with a specific student), Classroom Assignment (Assisting teacher in the classroom). PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting light-medium weighted objects. Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus and standard office and classroom equipment. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Sitting to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. HAZARDS: Contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals. Exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases. BENEFITS: A Benefit Entitlement for health, dental and vision coverage is available for permanent positions that are at least 4 hours per day. The amount of the entitlement is based on the number of hours worked per day.
