Comprising the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, we are the largest public arts institution in the City of San Francisco and one of the largest art museums in the United States. The Visitor Experience Team strives to provide a positive and welcoming experience for our community. As representatives of the Museums, we are constantly looking for ways to connect our visitors with local and global art, in order to promote their knowledge and curiosity of the past, deepen their engagement with the art and ideas of today, and stimulate their creative agency in their own futures.
As we begin to prepare for a busy Fall exhibition season, we are looking for individuals passionate about providing excellent service and creating memorable experiences for those who walk through our doors.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Proactively provides friendly and courteous service to members and visitors
Assists visitors in navigating museum spaces
Ability to work effectively with the public and coworkers
Tracking attendance into exhibition galleries
Moving stanchions and other equipment, placing signage based on business needs
Operates coat check, checking in visitors' personal items
Maintain neat and organized workspaces
Controls crowds as needed
Operates a digital point of sale system as needed
Promotes museum membership, audio tour, and special exhibition sales on-site
Informs, sells, and processes memberships
Performs other duties as assigned
Schedule:
Anticipated start date for this position is December 11, 2025
Must be available to work weekends, holidays and some evenings.
Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday availability preferred.
Regular scheduled shift times are 9am-5pm, and 10:30am-3:30pm (and occasionally during slower times, 9am-2pm).
There will be three paid training shifts scheduled upon hire.
Training shifts begin on Wednesdays and Thursdays, are from 9am-5pm and occur during the first two weeks of employment.
Scheduled shifts are made available to employees 14 days in advance.
Ideal candidates will be available to work 3 days per week, including at least one weekend day.
Hours fluctuate pending availability and business needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: A High School Diploma/G.E.D. with demonstrated interest/knowledge in hospitality, art history or practice, education, or related fields is a plus.
Work Experience: Must have at least two years of customer service experience.
Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated punctuality and dependability
Commitment and ability to work varying schedules
Excellent interpersonal manner and ability to communicate information in a clear and concise way
Demonstrated confidence and enjoyment in interacting and working with the public.
Dedicated interest in art, art history, the museum field, and a passion for sharing art with patrons
Ability to communicate problems and conduct constructive problem resolution
Ability to work quickly and efficiently during busy times
Ability to handle cash and operate a digital point of sale system
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron credit information, a professional demeanor, accuracy, and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and make decisions in the moment with indirect supervision
Strong follow-through, problem-solving, and administrative skills
Working Conditions:
Standing and walking for up to 6 hours on wood/stone floors throughout the work day
Lifting objects up to 30 pounds may be required
Bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and performing repetitive motions may be required
Dress Code: All black attire
