Position Summary
Under the direction of the VPASA, this position plans, and directs the academic and technical operations of the Aquarium Science Program. Working collaboratively with the Director of Facilities, this position will plan and implement building and equipment maintenance.
The Director of Aquarium Science Program will be responsible for outreach and collaboration with academic and industry-wide entities and secondary and post-secondary partners (STEM) to further the mission of the college. This position provides coordination to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programing throughout Oregon Coast Community College’s service area.
Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Activities
- Reviews, updates, and oversees the AQS student admission and orientation processes.
- Provides academic and career counseling for potential Aquarium Science students.
- Identifies and establishes internship and practicum opportunities for Aquarium Science Program students.
- Maintains communication with practicum and internship site directors concerning students’ training and performance.
- Reviews, updates, and maintains a system to collect data and continued communications with program graduates.
Curriculum Review & Development
- Responsible for an annual review of Aquarium Science Program curriculum to ensure it remains up-to-date and in compliance with current industry standards, ensuring catalog and webforms reflect updates.
- Responsible for ensuring Animal Care & Use protocols are approved for all courses within the AQS Program.
- Develops technical learning environment that simulate animal life support systems to replicate environments that exist at commercial or public aquaria and other industries to assist students in learning the discipline and state of the art technology currently in use.
- Ensures coordination of teaching and exam schedules to ensure optimal use of facilities.
- Responsible for consistent interface with industry contacts to create opportunities for OCCC students and graduates.
- Maintains contact with alumni network to ensure AQS programing and career connections.
Instructional Support
- Coordinates training and ensures the completion of assigned maintenance of aquarium facilities, machinery, and equipment.
- Schedules field trips and other associated educational activities.
AQS Programming
Administration
- Meets with members of site visit committees to review status of AQS educational program, its accomplishments, ability to deliver curricula, completion of records of students, faculty qualifications, faculty evaluation process, facility and equipment maintenance, etc.
- Oversees the Aquarium Science Program budget and prepares cost projections for each fiscal year.
- Works closely with College Leadership concerning plans for future growth and academic offerings.
- Attends local, regional and statewide meetings related to STEM/AQS.
- Represents OCCC on the Oregon Aquaculture Advisory Committee.
- Staffs the local industry advisory and the national visiting committees.
- Chairs the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Reporting
- Completes scientific collecting permit applications and year-end reports to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
- Verifies year-end AQS FTE to the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Committee.
Promotion
- Coordinates the design, preparation, and distribution of AQS program marketing materials
- Establishes and maintains databases of employers and educational contacts for promotional purposes.
- Promotes the Aquarium Science program by making presentations at industry conferences and meetings, community events and high school programs.
- Prepares press releases and articles for industry publications and journals.
- Utilizes social media to promote the AQS program.
Advancement & Fundraising
- Working with the OCCC Grants Director, prepare grant applications for projects and capital needs related to the Aquarium Science Programs.
- Meets with current and potential granting agencies, private donors, supporters, and benefactors to articulate program goals, progress and outcomes to secure support for the AQS program.
Facilities Management
- Responsible for ensuring the day to day husbandry health management of the animals and plants within the Aquarium Science facility.
- Responsible for aquaculture activities and related equipment maintenance.
- Responsible for ensuring that the animal and plant life support equipment and machinery are operating in a safe, sanitary, and efficient manner.
- Supervises the acquisition and disposition of animal and plant collections.
- Responsible for ensuring appropriate and timely communication with the attending veterinarian regarding medical management within the animal collection.
- Responsible for ensuring water quality and filtration processes.
- Responsible for the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of all equipment and laboratory supplies in the Aquarium Science Program.
- Ensures hazardous material are properly stored and marked and that all Occupational Health and Safety standards are implemented and followed.
Miscellaneous
- Participates in training, in-services and professional development
- Supports student success through participation in college committee work, Welcome Week, OCCC Cares, Commencement and/or related activities.
- Performs other duties, as assigned, that support the College’s mission.

Supervisory Responsibility
Supervises Faculty, Classified, Student, Volunteer, and/or Temporary Staff assigned to the area.
Supervision includes:
- Collaborating with Human Resources to Write/Review Job Descriptions.
- Overseeing Unit budgets and ensuring effective allocation of resources.
- Hiring, Onboarding, Training, and Evaluating all direct reports.
- Encouraging Development and Professional enrichment of direct reports through tuition waivers, conferences, certifications, or other development opportunities.
- Recognizing direct reports for achievement and success.
- Initiating disciplinary action when needed, responding to employee complaints, and effectively recommending various personnel actions.
- Ensuring Staff are apprised of College Policies and Procedures.
- Ensuring a backup process is in place for all critical operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Science, Biology or a related field of study
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the aquatic animal husbandry profession, of which 3 years were spent working as a departmental or program level manager.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Science, Biology or related field of study preferred.
- AALSO Level III Life Support Operator certification
- AALSO Level III Water quality technician certification.
- Professional experience in post-secondary education
- Bilingual – Spanish
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
- Industry expertise to function in the aquatic animal husbandry field as curator skill and knowledge level.
- Working knowledge of current technical job skill sets required to perform aquatic animal husbandry, aquatic life support, and marine interpretation activities.
- Ability to direct the activities of instructors and supervise staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining.
- Strong interpersonal skills that promote cooperative learning and working environments and staff.
- Experience establishing student internship and practicum opportunities.
- Ability to develop curriculum, write lesson plans, establish lesson objectives, and evaluate student learning/performance.
- Working knowledge of computer software applications for spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and database management purposes.
- Possess excellent organizational skills including multi-tasking, record keeping, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain flexibility in the work environment. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to provide inclusive learning and working environments that are sensitive to and respectful of the varying cultural orientations, lifestyle, learning styles, and learning needs of students and staff.
- Willingness to embrace technological advances in related industry and incorporate this technology in the working and learning environment.
- Ability to complete grant applications and technical report documents.
- Other skills include administrative skills, the ability to analyze, trouble-shoot, resolve conflict creatively and apply policies on a consistent basis.
Working Environment & Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

- Work in and around aquarium tanks and laboratories.
- visit tide pools, collect and transport aquatic animals in potentially dark, cold, and inclement weather.
Assignment will include presence at all primary OCCC locations and may include evening and weekend work. Travel between College sites and other locations will be required. Occasional travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for training and other purposes.
