About the Department
The Louisiana State Museum’s collections and educational programs stimulate awareness and appreciation of our state’s rich and diverse history and culture.
This is a full-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA.
This position is responsible for the daily operation and preventative maintenance of the museum's mechanical equipment, climate control system, water and wastewater systems, and general repairs to the building as needed for nine (9) museum properties, twenty-six (26) Irby apartments, and two (2) townhouses. In the event of an emergency or special need situation, the position may have to travel out of town for assignments at other museum locations, including: E.D. White in Thibodaux, Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Aviation and Cypress sawmill museums in Patterson, and Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge. The Maintenance Repairer will report directly to the Maintenance Foreman.
Position Duties
One year of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or as a parks building and grounds attendant; OR
Six semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses.

Job Duties:
- Performs daily operations and scheduled maintenance of the museum HVAC systems, including lubrication, replacing and repairing service lines, drains, traps, bearings, filter replacement, and cleaning.
- Removal and replacement of motors, valves, coils, service lines, and all hardware as needed.
- Checking the temperature and humidity throughout the museum complexes and keeping records.
- Performs minor construction and building repairs to include installation, finishing, painting of sheetrock and paneling.
- Performs installation and repairs of wood, tile, marble, and slate floorings and walls.
- Completes minor repairs to doors, door frames, and windows, window frames, which includes removal, cutting, and installing glass panes.
- Performs minor plumbing repairs and installations to include pipe threading, soldering, and gluing on water supply and wastewater systems.
- Performs repairs to all plumbing fixtures such as sink faucets, toilets, tubs valves throughout the museum, including drain repair and stoppages and any other plumbing as needed.
- Performs minor electrical maintenance of electrical systems to include installations and removal of conduit, electrical wiring, receptacle, and switch replacement.
- Performs removal and installation of wiring to HVAC system motors, condensers, fans, and blowers on change-outs.
- Oversees outside contractors to ensure compliance with contracts, performance to industry standards, all state and municipal codes on all museum projects.
- Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment; current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Maintenance Repairer 1 or 2, depending on the experience of the selected applicant.
Work Schedule: This is a full-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or travel.How To Apply:
