  • ​This job is a member of the Information Technology Team within the Information Technology Division.
  • Designs, engineers, and deploys systems at American Airlines data centers to backup servers using NetBackup and Data Domain products.  Additionally, coordinates with managed service providers to ensure quality backups in our managed data centers.

What you'll do

  • Collaborates with project managers, other engineers, architects, administrators, and customers to deliver projects on time and within budget
  • Develops documentation for requirements, architectural designs, engineering drawings and diagrams, as well as operational policies and procedures
  • Develops and documents best practices for system installation, deployment, and operation
  • Manages technology proof of concept selection criteria, evaluation, and testing
  • Explores and stays abreast of new technologies that can bring value to the organization
  • Encourages an environment of sharing and team work among the project teams
  • Lead cloud cost optimization initiatives across multi-cloud environments to drive financial efficiency and operational excellence.
  • Develop and maintain scalable FinOps frameworks, including budgeting, forecasting, and chargeback models.
  • Collaborate with engineering, finance, and procurement teams to align cloud usage with business objectives and financial targets.
  • Build and automate dashboards, alerts, and reporting tools to provide real-time visibility into cloud spend and usage.
  • Evaluate and integrate third-party FinOps tools and platforms to enhance cost management capabilities.
  • Educate stakeholders on cloud financial best practices and promote a culture of cost awareness and ownership.
  • Analyze usage patterns and recommend architectural changes to reduce waste and improve cost-performance ratios.
  • Collaborate with Cybersecurity, enterprise architects to define and Implement cloud solution best practices following Well-Architect Framework best practices for security, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.    
  • Ensure customer needs (product strategy objectives, user requirements, and technical environment compatibility) are met.    
  • Contribute to the development of multi-cloud governance and configuration strategies, exploring AWS capabilities and tools to support future expansion.
  • Document policies, procedures, and technical configurations, assisting internal teams in understanding and adhering to established governance standards. 

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Technology, Information Systems (CIS/MIS), Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience/training
  • 3 years of experience as a systems or infrastructure engineer, including backup engineering

 

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Technology, Information Systems (CIS/MIS), Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience/training
  • Certification in any cloud platform such as Azure, AWS or GCP (add)
  • 4+ years of experience working in a cloud environment
  • 3+ years of experience in cloud cost optimization and reporting areas.

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Ability to analyze complex problems and implement solutions and/or workarounds
  • Experience in DevOps Toolchain methodologies, including Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Cloud infrastructure and networking
    • Cloud governance and security best practices  
    • Cloud resource provisioning and life cycle management via IaCTagging inheritance strategy, and cost allocation methods (showback/chargeback)
    • Cross-functional collaboration with engineering, finance and product teams
    • Ability to influence cross-functional teams to adopt cost-efficient design and operational practices.
    • Proficiency in Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban and tool such as ADO.  
    • Ability to optimize solutions for performance, resiliency and reliability while maintaining an eye toward simplicity.   Ability to concisely convey ideas verbally, in writing, in code, and in diagrams.  
    • Familiar with FinOps and cloud cost analysis and optimization such as:
    • Monitor and analyze cloud usage and cost trends across AWS and Azure platforms.
    • Identify underutilized resources, orphaned assets, and opportunities for rightsizing.
    • Recommend and implement cost-saving strategies such as reserved instances, savings plans, and auto-scaling.
    • Partner with finance, procurement, and engineering teams to align cloud spend with business goals.
    • Develop or integrate tools for automated cost tracking, anomaly detection, and forecasting.
    • Leverage platforms like CloudHealth, Cloudability, or native cloud cost management tools.
    • Promote FinOps best practices across engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to adapt to changing priorities and work environments
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with a keen desire to learn and expand depth of knowledge
  • Ability to thrive in a sense-of-urgency environment and leverage best practices
  • Proficiency in  Agile project management methodology, specifically within the infrastructure area
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio)
