POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Medical Assistant Lead, the Medical Assistant will perform basic patient care related duties to maintain and ensure a high quality of medical care for the Shingle Springs Tribal Health medical patients. Such activities may include performing and providing a safe and clean environment for all-medical patients, and ensuring equipment and supplies are in clean and working order.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by keeping exam rooms in order, cleaning equipment, reporting equipment repair requirements and maintaining supplies.
- Assists in maintaining inventory levels for solutions, supplies, and equipment, and participates in economical utilization of supplies.
- Completes patient charges for services and supplies.
- Maintains patient flow for a provider that ensures smooth daily operations.
- Prepares exam room and escorts patients to exam room. Makes brief patient assessment and takes brief history. Prepares patients for examination by provider.
- Records height, weight, temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure in an accurate and precise manner.
- Prepares room for minor surgical procedures; sets up equipment as requested by provider; in conjunction with the Provider, ensures proper consent for procedure has been accurately completed and signed before procedure begins.
- Assists with special tests and procedures; prepares the patient and provides emotional support.
- Administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections in a safe and therapeutic manner by Physician’s order; follows all protocol for medication administration accurately and precisely.
- Performs EKGs, audiometric, spirometry and snellon screening and laboratory procedures in compliance with all applicable standards and regulations and Medical Clinic policy.
- Consistently draws blood properly, records lab draws in EHR and type of test; labels specimens and completes requisitions completely and accurately.
- Maintains the standards of patient care and implements the policies and procedures of the Medical Department.
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of safety policies and procedures including universal precautions, infection control, and utilizes proper body mechanics.
- Responsible for communicating problems identified involving personnel, medical staff, patients, families and the general public to the Clinic Manager.
- Participates in the Quality Improvement Program as instructed.
- Complies with OSHA and all State and Federal regulations.
- Maintains compliance with program hazard communications, safety and infection control programs.
- Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional maturity and tolerance with an even temperament when dealing with ill people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and a professional attitude when relating to patients, families, and coworkers.
- Performs other specific duties, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Candidate requires graduation from a medical assistant program, or completion of the first semester of a nursing program, or any combination of education and experience that will meet the skills and competency needed.
- Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity to chronic medical and social problems, especially those specific to the Indian community.
- Must possess a valid California Driver License and be insurable by the Tribe’s auto insurer.
- Will not use illegal drugs, abuse prescriptions drugs, or be under the influence of alcohol during working hours. Will agree to blood and/or urine level testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
- Post job offer: CPR/BLS certification, TB test, and annual flu shot (during flu season) are required as a condition of employment, unless a medical/religious accommodation request is provided and approved. Hepatitis B Vaccine will be offered at no cost to employees, but it is not required.
NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
