The Special Education Program Coordinator is an integral member of the building’s instructional leadership team, supporting a designated student population and instructional team within a specific program or house. Reporting to the Assistant Principal, the Coordinator provides embedded instructional leadership, ensures compliance with special education policies, supports teacher growth, and advances student achievement through coaching, supervision, and targeted technical assistance. This role is designed to foster program excellence, staff development, and a culture of high expectations through a collaborative, distributed leadership model.
Coordinators will include: (1) Autistic Support, (1) Learning/Emotional Support, (1) Life Skills/Multiple Disabilities Support
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct frequent classroom walkthroughs, provide in-the-moment coaching and actionable feedback to teachers and support staff
- Support implementation of evidence-based instructional practices aligned with program frameworks, IEPs, and curricular standards.
- Collaborate with instructional coaches, department chairs, and related service providers to promote instructional consistency and excellence in teaching.
- Participate in data review meetings to support teachers in analyzing student data and developing instructional and intervention strategies that improve program-level student outcomes.
- Serve as the instructional leader for a designated program area (e.g., Emotional Support/Learning Support, Life Skills/Multiple Disabilities Support, Autistic Support) and ensure individualized programming that meets students' strengths and needs.
- Collaborate with families, service providers, and community partners to promote student growth and readiness for post-secondary opportunities.
- Conduct formal evaluations of assigned teachers and support staff, participate in hiring and onboarding processes, and help coordinate program schedules and staff assignments.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to both new and experienced staff to support continuous professional growth and instructional quality.
- Ensure IEP process fidelity, compliance with legal and procedural requirements, and high-quality documentation within assigned programs.
- Serve as a resource for staff on special ed law, intermediate unit policies, and best practices; support IEP meetings and the development of goals, progress monitoring systems, and positive behavior plans.
- Collaborate regularly with the Assistant Principal, Principal, other Special Education Program Coordinators, Instructional Coaches, and Department Chairs to align school-wide initiatives with program-specific needs.
- Lead or contribute to professional learning communities and facilitate targeted professional development to build staff capacity.
- Promote a safe, structured, and inclusive school environment by reinforcing consistent behavioral expectations and classroom management strategies.
- Support the development and implementation of safety protocols, emergency drills, and behavior response systems in coordination with the administrative team.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in responding to complex student social and emotional situations, including behavioral crises, mental health concerns, and de-escalation needs.
- Support staff in implementing behavior support plans and trauma-informed strategies aligned with student needs and ensure coordination with mental health providers and interagency supports.
- Monitor classroom climate and foster a positive staff and student culture through visibility, relationship-building, and proactive recognition efforts.
- Serve as a liaison between administrators and instructional teams to ensure clear communication and shared accountability across programs.
- Model and implement appropriate de-escalation techniques and physical management strategies in alignment with provided training and established protocols to ensure student and staff safety.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience in special education required
- Demonstrated success in improving instructional quality and student outcomes
- Experience with formal teacher evaluation, curriculum implementation, and professional development delivery preferred
Professional or Other Required Clearances - Valid Pennsylvania Instructional Certification in Special Education or related field required
- Pennsylvania Principal Certification required
