ATC Automation is seeking a hands-on and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical development of custom automation machinery and tooling systems at our Simi Valley, CA location. These may vary from small R&D tasks to large scale production equipment. The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will work with customers to define the needs and specifications for their projects. These projects will generally be interdisciplinary, and the engineer will work with other members of the team to deliver an integrated and functional solution. Responsibilities:
- Lead the design of systems, mechanisms, and components for custom automated machinery and tools
- Continually develop, improve, and drive best practices and standards
- Integrate off-the-shelf and custom robotics, actuation, sensors, vision systems, and other automation peripherals
- Meet project budgets and schedules and coordinate progress with project managers and other project stakeholders
- Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of designs.
- Provide training and mentorship to other Engineers including reviewing and approving their work.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to the production team during the build and commissioning of your machines.
- When necessary, validate designs prior to final design by building and testing prototypes
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams on controls and software integration
- Coordinate with and manage external suppliers
- Coordinate with customers to refine requirements and align on project requirements
- Support equipment deployment at customer sites as needed
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated talent and track record in automation and machine design
- Ability to size and specify actuators, sensors, vision systems, and other automation peripherals
- Mastery of SolidWorks, or equivalent CAD software
- Mastery of engineering drawings and tolerances
- Understanding of GD&T, Y14.5M-2009
- Extensive knowledge of materials and fabrication processes (machining, welding, etc.)
- Proficiency with controls and software concepts
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- 6+ years designing custom automated equipment
- Proficiency specifying and troubleshooting pneumatic components
- Proven expertise in designing fixtures, jigs, and other tooling
Preferred Experience:
- BS or higher degree in engineering field
- 8+ years in a mechanical design role, in a custom industrial automation and/or machine building environment
- Understanding of CE, NFPA 79, and SEMI S8 compliance
- Direct experience troubleshooting automated equipment
- Ability to specify vision equipment, including lens, lighting, filters, and sensors.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor level
- Capable of exerting:
- 20-50 lbs of force occasionally
- 10-25 lbs of force frequently
- Up to 10 lbs of force constantly
- Visual Acuity: Near vision with or without correction
- Hearing Ability: Able to listen for and interpret machine sounds for diagnostic purposes
