POSITION SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of the Battalion Chief and/or Fire Captain, this position will assist in all aspects of wild land and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation. Fire Fighter I will perform tasks to control and extinguish wildfires as needed. Incumbent will operate equipment as needed in the task of firefighting and perform projects such as tree removal, hazard fuel reduction and prescribed burning. This is a uniformed position.
Position Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as a crewmember (Firefighter FFT1) on Hazardous Fuels, Wild Land-Urban-Interface, and Wild Land Fire Suppression crew.
2. Assists in all aspects of wild land and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation.
3. Collects fire weather data, fuel and/or soil samples, map projects, and maintains appropriate records, including fire reports.
4. Assists the Fire Captain, collecting and evaluating weather, fuels, topography, and fire behavior data for prescribed and wild land fires.
5. Performs hazard fuel reduction projects that entail mechanical and/or prescribed fire removal of vegetation through use of chainsaws, fire, etc.
6. Evaluates observed conditions and problems, makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problem noted, and provides results to higher-level personnel for analysis.
7. Serves as a holding or ignition crewmember on wild land and prescribed fires.
8. Operates four-wheel drive pickup trucks and fire engines, portable pumps, chain saws, and other common fire equipment.
9. Performs tasks to control and extinguish wildfires as needed.
10. Responsible for vehicle logs, maintenance and upkeep of all vehicles, equipment, or other forestry and fire related gear.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
1. G7: Highschool diploma or GED with five years specified experience.
2. Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes required of the position in the future.
3. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be 18 years or older, required.
2. Basic 32 Fire Training and required refresher training.
3. Chainsaw FALA B Certificate.
4. Current First Aid and CPR Certification.
5. Knowledge of hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed burning.
6. Familiarity with computers, including word processing and spreadsheets.
7. Ability to communicate effectively.
8. Sufficient physical strength and dexterity to accomplish fieldwork (Work Capacity Test-Arduous).
9. Demonstrable ability to use originality and good judgment in adapting accepted practices and
procedures required to accomplish specific tasks under changing or unexpected circumstances.
10. Skill and experience operating and maintaining vehicle during extreme weather conditions.
11. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history,
culture and values.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
