Our new Designer will join an ambitious and creative team, playing a key part in driving forward how we represent the University externally through graphic design. Delivering on our commitment to showcase Birmingham City University as a destination of choice for prospective students.
You will be someone who understands what good design looks like to our target market and will be passionate about creating jaw-dropping design work to drive forward the awareness of our brand. You will be enthused by the prospect of designing work for the youth market which competes with brands across a range of other sectors – and be equally at home creating compelling corporate materials which harness the University’s ambitions.
Reporting to the Design and Production Manager you will join a team of equally enthusiastic designers, content creators and communicators, all working together to deliver on the goals laid out in the University’s Strategy 2030 and beyond.
- Develop imaginative, original graphic design solutions to support the University’s online and offline marketing communications requirements, translating strategic marketing ideas into design concepts.
- Work on the University’s creative identity and visual representation, through sector leading digital and print media.
- Develop show-stopping advertising campaigns which promote the university to key demographics.
- Support with the art direction of large-scale photoshoots, ensuring an impactful and high-quality end product.
- Work collaboratively with teams across the university to understand their design requirements.
- Regularly review existing design trends and conduct market research to identify best practice among competitor universities and within other sectors, putting forward recommendations and delivering future improvements.
- Act as brand guardian for the University’s brand and sub brands.
- Honours degree or equivalent in Graphic Design/design-related subject or extensive experience in a designer role.
- Evidence of being a self-motivated, creative thinker.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of a diplomatic and confident approach to handling internal stakeholders through negotiation, conflict resolution and presentation capabilities.
- Good IT skills with proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office, CMS and CRM applications.
Able to demonstrate significant experience in:
- Extensive practical experience of designing high quality materials across a wide range of media formats.
- A comprehensive knowledge of design and digital media processes, with high level of awareness of responsive and adaptive online design.
- Experience of design incorporating brand and sub branding, used to working within and setting brand guidelines.
- Experience of working with external Marketing agencies/designers.
- Experience of digital design trends within the Higher Education sector and commercial sector would be an advantage.
Specialist skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of Adobe CS (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects).
- Experience with print process and colour management.
- Experience of working on interactive design - websites, apps, banners, icons, videos, animated gifs, button design etc.
- Knowledge of how to upload digital content to a range of channels.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with people from both non-technical and technical backgrounds
