Job Summary
The Clinical Lab Scientist provide laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, Laguna Honda Hospital, District Health Centers and other facilities under the auspices of the SF Public Health Department. Perform laboratory testing procedures, computer functions, quality control and preventative maintenance. Perform patient, quality control (QC), proficiency, linearity, precision testing; develops skills and maintains competencies in the chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, special chemistry and toxicology subdepartments performing stat, routine, limited, specialized, waived, moderate, and high complexity non-waived testing. Determine suitability of specimen and ensure accuracy of testing by following established procedures and policies. Responsible for all work assigned in all areas of the Clinical Core Laboratory including routine procedures, method improvement and development and evaluation. Performs emergency, routine, and scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with procedures. Recognizes and addresses instrument and testing issues in a timely manner. Troubleshoot instrument with or without assistance from the service technical team/vendor hotline and/or Lab supervisor. Troubleshoots instrument correctly and appropriately using good judgement and knowledge of the instrument. Performs instrument validation experiments, other testing assays, quality assurance processes, as directed or assigned by specialist/s and supervisor/s. Actively participates in quality assurance activities to ensure all standards are met by the laboratory. Assist supervisors and specialists investigation and resolution of data for Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) projects as well as other improvement other projects. Complies with all departmental and institutional policies, local, state, federal regulations and standards set by accrediting agencies when performing job duties. Optimizes workflow and time on the bench to increase productivity and prioritize work duties. Participates as a team member. Promotes a collaborative, positive and team-oriented environment. Accountable for own work responsibilities. Demonstrates professionalism and excellent work ethics. There are multiple openings for this role.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $65.53 - $81.63 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science or foreign equivalent degree in Medical Technology, Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science, or closely related field
- Requires possession of a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License, clinical laboratory scientist license or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the California Department of Health.
- Requires completion of coursework in biology or biology related subjects, mathematics, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and virology
- Requires 3 years of experience as a clinical laboratory scientist/technologist or medical laboratory scientist/technologist
- Also requires:
- Documented experience in Core laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis)
- Documented previous experience with performing instrument validations, writing technical procedures, and training employees
- Documented experience managing proficiency testing, handling and organizing proficiency samples and documents, and appropriately submitting test results
- Prior documented experience training employees in new software applications or information systems or actively participated in new software validation and implementation
- Evidence of having actively participated in regulatory inspections and/or accrediting agency audits
- Documented experience serving as a lead in the absence of a supervisor
- Demonstrable proficiency in using HIS and LIS platforms, Microsoft Word and Excel
