Position Title: Internal Communications Specialist

Department: Public Relations and Marketing Department

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing


Position Summary

The Internal Communications Specialist will lead the development and execution of the internal communications strategy at NHS. This employee will work closely with senior leaders and key stakeholders to ensure that all internal communication is clear, consistent, and aligned with NHS’s goals and values. This employee will be responsible for relaying timely and accurate information to ensure the wellbeing of animals in need.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop and execute the internal communications strategy for NHS, including key messaging and strategies.
  • Create and deliver internal communications content, including email updates, newsletters, intranet content, videos, and presentations.
  • Work with key organizational stakeholders to ensure all internal communication is clear, consistent, and aligned with NHS’s goals and values.
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of internal communications and make recommendations for improvement based on feedback and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain a content calendar to ensure that internal communications are timely and relevant. The calendar will include events such as training classes, education camps, external events, and internal events.
  • Identify opportunities to promote employee engagement and help foster a positive organization culture.
  • Assist with crisis communications.
  • Maintain NHS’ internal communication tools, effectively being the editor-in-chief of the NHS intranet.
  • Assist in the creation of communicative and easily digestible signage and graphics for various departments to utilize as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in internal communications, corporate communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience with content creation and delivery, including email, newsletters, intranet content, graphics, videos, and presentations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders across the organization.
  • Knowledge of best practices for internal communications.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience managing and maintaining internal communication tools (internal email software, intranet, etc.).

  • The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet, though barking or whining of animals may be escalated at certain times in certain areas of the building.
  • High exposure to animals whose reactions to the shelter environment cannot be predicted.
  • Temperatures in the shelter environment are varied, though usually moderate, and dependent on the season. 
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to work around animals without severe allergic reactions.
  • As work may need to be done outside of the shelter, the employee may encounter environmental issues outside of our control.  When this occurs, the employee must report the issues immediately to their direct supervisor who will work to resolution.
