The Youth Development Professional (YDP) - Culinary will work with teens in a Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson setting to provide hands-on cooking experiences, foster teamwork, and encourage healthy living. This role combines youth development, mentorship, and culinary education to promote life skills, self-confidence, and creativity among youth. The YDP will facilitate culinary workshops, plan activities, and support youth in developing skills that align with the organization’s mission and goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:


Culinary Education & Programming:

  • Lead and supervise culinary workshops and classes for youth of various age groups       (middle to high school).
  • Teach basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, nutrition, and meal planning.
  • Plan and prepare lesson plans and menus that are engaging, educational, and       developmentally appropriate for youth.
  • Organize cooking demonstrations, recipe contests, and collaborative cooking activities.
  • Introduce youth to a variety of cuisines, cultures, and healthy eating habits

Mentoring & Support:

  • Act as a positive role model, building rapport and trust with youth participants.
  • Provide individualized support to youth, encouraging teamwork, communication, and       problem-solving skills.
  • Foster a safe and inclusive environment where all participants feel respected and valued.
  • Help youth develop leadership skills through opportunities to assist with meal       preparation, teaching others, and taking ownership of certain tasks.

Program Administration:

  • Assist in creating and maintaining a structured, fun, and educational environment.
  • Track and report progress on participants’ skill development and behavior in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, program participation, and evaluations.
  • Ensure proper health and safety standards are met, including food safety, sanitation, and kitchen equipment maintenance.

Collaboration & Outreach:

  • Work closely with the Program Director to coordinate special events (e.g., culinary competitions, family nights, etc.) that incorporate the culinary program.
  • Engage with parents and community members to promote the program and share student progress.
  • Collaborate with local chefs, food businesses, or nutritionists for guest demonstrations or events.


Professional Development & Teamwork:

  • Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities related to youth       development, culinary arts, and safety.
  • Attend team meetings and contribute to program planning and brainstorming.
  • Uphold the mission and values of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson, demonstrating       professionalism and a commitment to youth empowerment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma required. Culinary degree or certification preferred.
  • Experience: 6 months of experience working with youth in an educational or recreational setting particularly in a Boys & Girls Clubs of America or similar environment, is preferred. 
  • Serve Safe Manager Certification: Currently certified or able to obtain within the first 30 days of employment.

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Strong knowledge of culinary skills, kitchen safety, and nutrition.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with youth, parents, and team members.
  • Ability to create an inclusive and positive learning environment.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks, including preparing lesson plans and overseeing program logistics.
  • Passion for youth development and culinary arts.

Working Conditions

  • Hours may vary depending on the needs of the program, including afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move kitchen equipment or supplies, up to 35 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks at once.
