Summary: The Innovation Design Engineer designs, tests, and documents components and assemblies as part of the Product Innovation Lab. The Design Engineer performs high-level design for concept testing and validation for potential new technologies or applications for Stellar Industries.


The Product Innovation team is a unique engineering team operating independently of sustaining and new product development engineering and is dedicated to researching new technologies and applications. The design engineer supports these efforts by researching new technologies and designing concepts for validation by Stellar.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 


• Perform design calculations and prepare equipment and/or material specifications.

• Produce concept designs in 3D CAD and draft those designs in 2D for concept builds.

• Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on structural designs. 

• Coordinate work with other engineers, engineering technicians, and the R&D lab.

• Design and coordinate testing of designs to validate functionality of concepts.

• Compile data and prepare describing concepts and their application for review.

• Perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned and required.

• Follow all safety rules as laid out in the company employee handbook and other supplemental safety training. Continuously promote a culture of working safety.

• Perform other duties as assigned. 



General Competencies and Skills:


• General knowledge of Microsoft 365 products with proficiency in Word and Excel.

• Capable of reading and accurately interpreting engineering drawings and other technical documents.

• Familiar with structural welding and weld symbols.

• Knowledge of ASME GD&T standards and their application.

• Ability to effectively communicate through written and oral means.

• Analytical skills and ability to troubleshoot and solve complex problems.

• Working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems associated with the automotive and work truck industry preferred.

• Ability to measure physical components accurately using machine tools.

• Familiarity with FEA software and interpretation of simulation results.

• Strong applied mathematics skills, including physics, trigonometry, and statistics.

• Working knowledge of 2D and 3D design software required. AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred.

• Knowledge of ERP software and associated systems preferred.

• Be willing to work both independently and in a team environment.


Education and Experience:


• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

• Three to Five years of experience in the design or manufacturing of mechanical systems.


Physical Requirements:


• Regular standing, walking, and use of hands to feel or handle objects, tools, and controls.

• Regular hands-on work both above and below vehicles, including the use of ladders and creepers.

• Frequent verbal communication required.

• Ability to lift and manipulate up to 40lbs

• May be required to work indoors in a shop environment or outside in variable weather conditions.


Additional Requirements:


• Company sponsored continuing education and training.

• Some overnight travel may be required.

• Valid drivers license.
