Description
Job Summary:
Mechanical Design Engineers are responsible for researching mechanical technologies to use in improving our motion control product offering. They support existing products, new product design and development, and continuous innovation and improvements. They may interface with sales, customers, and vendors to develop custom encoders or modifications to existing designs that meet all specified customer requirements, including regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Supports and/or creates new product designs
- Make enhancements to existing product designs
- Create prototypes and develop written test protocols
- Designs manufacturing and test control apparatus and equipment
- Design quality and manufacturability into new products and production processes
- Analyzes design trade-offs, conducts design reviews, solicits input
- Innovates to resolve technical issues
- Supports the product launch process
- Develop and execute project scope, cost estimates, feasibility and schedules
- Communicates specification for purchase of materials and equipment/tooling when necessary
- Design high speed rotating assemblies including shafts, housings, bearings, seals, etc.
- Generate deliverables such as rotor dynamics analysis
- Other mechanical design engineer work as needed
Requirements
Skills:
- Ability to select high speed bearings and design into systems
- Ability to design high IP rated electro-mechanical devices
- Understand and minimize assembly effects on runout and concentricity
- Understanding of internal system foreign object debris (FOD) generation and ability to minimize in design
- Knowledge and understanding of the current industry guidelines for designing, manufacturing, and testing
- Experience with compliance, engineering standards, and certifications including knowledge of ISO standards and documentation
- Experience with 3D CAD design (SolidWorks experience a plus)
- Experience working with external vendors
- Proven track record for developing and delivering complete solutions
- Strong technical writing skills
- Ability to lead large projects
- Ability to train and motivate personnel
- Ability to communicate independently and effectively with all levels of management
- Persistence to meet schedules
- Advocates positive team concepts
- Good communication and organizational skills
Qualifications:
- BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering required
- At least three years in product development from design concept to production required
- Coursework in Design for Manufacturability and/or Mechatronics a plus
- Able to travel domestically and abroad as projects require, but typically averaging 15% or less
- US citizenship or permanent work visa required
- Willing to relocate to North Idaho required

Essential Functions:
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required
- Use of upper body, arms, and hands throughout the day
- Lifting 10-20 pounds repeatedly throughout the day
- Bending, stooping, and reaching overhead throughout the day to reach materials to move or pickup
- Normal color vision (due to different colored wires)
- Able to work regularly with epoxy, glues, sealants
