- Ufficio in Austin
About the role
Join our mechanical engineers in Austin as we refine, scale, and document the manufacturing processes that turn advanced‑reactor designs into hardware. Over a 12‑ to 16‑week term you will own a clearly scoped project—from concept through implementation—while gaining daily mentorship and shop‑floor experience.
What you’ll do
- Build and update 3‑D CAD models, detailed drawings, and GD&T for machined or additively‑manufactured parts.
- Program and prove out CNC tool‑paths on 3‑axis mills and 5‑axis mill‑turn centers alongside machinists.
- Draft work instructions, router steps, and inspection plans that satisfy ASME and internal quality standards.
- Collect production data, perform root‑cause analysis on non‑conformances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Apply lean or Six Sigma techniques to cut cycle time or scrap on an assigned cell.
- Present your findings and quantified results to engineering leadership at the end of the term.
Qualifications
Required
- Currently enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, or Nuclear Engineering (or closely related field).
- ≥ 3 months of hands‑on engineering experience (course projects, research, internships, student shop, or personal builds).
- Working knowledge of CAD/CAM and basic structural or thermal analysis.
- Able to work full‑time, on‑site in Austin TX, for at least 12 consecutive weeks starting August or September 2025.
Preferred
- GPA 3.4 + and completion of a manufacturing laboratory or capstone design course.
- ≥ 6 months experience applying GD&T, programming CNC equipment, or operating metal additive systems.
- Familiarity with ASME Section III, NQA‑1, or comparable manufacturing quality codes.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technicians in a fast‑paced shop environment.
- Exposure to lean manufacturing tools (5S, kaizen, value‑stream mapping) or statistical process control.
Additional requirements
- Must provide own housing and daily transportation to the Austin facility; on‑site parking is available.
- Some tasks involve standing, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 25 lbs while wearing PPE.
