This Team Lead role involves having 4 to 5 direct Software Developer reports and running a Scrum team. The role is approximately 80% management and 20% "hands-on" (code and design reviewing, 1:1's with team members, etc) with little actual coding. Technology utilized within this team includes Java, SQL, React and AWS. Hybrid remote from our Wakefield, MA HQ (2x a week onsite minimum).

As the Team Lead of Software Engineering team, you will be a critical leader within our organization, responsible for hands-on technical contributions and effective people management. You will lead a team of software engineers to design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, and efficient product. This role requires a 50/50 balance of strong technical expertise and the ability to guide and develop a high-performing engineering team. Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead by example with hands-on contributions to product engineering projects. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to team members. Collaborate with engineers to design and implement complex features. Ensure quality, high scalability and performance of VestmarkOne.
  • Technology Evaluation: Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and processes to improve product capabilities.
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to the product. Develop strategies to proactively identify and address potential problems.
  • Documentation: Ensure thorough documentation of VestmarkOne and promote best practices for documentation.
  • Team Leadership: Provide coaching, mentorship, and career development support to team members. Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture. As needed, recruit, hire, and onboard talented software engineers.
  • Performance Management: Set clear expectations and performance goals for the team. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback. Prepare and deliver annual performance reviews and 6-month check-ins for team members. Identify training and development opportunities.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with other engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to align product development with business objectives. Create and maintain detailed project plans and Gantt charts that outline timelines and milestones. Report weekly project updates and status such as “On Track” or “Behind Schedule”. Allocate and manage resources to meet project deliverables, ensuring coordination with other teams as needed. Establish clear, measurable goals and success criteria for project milestones. This involves setting target dates, providing status updates against those dates, and ensuring team accountability for meeting these commitments. Serve as a point of contact on behalf of Engineering, ensuring stakeholders are informed of progress, risks and changes to the plan.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 4-5 years of proven experience in software development and design using Object Oriented programming language such as Java or C++, Hibernate, Spring Boot, REST APIs, SQL Server, etc.
  • Strong technical proficiency in relevant technologies and tools.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated leadership and people management experience.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a results-oriented mindset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and traditional project management.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical work with managerial responsibilities.
