At the forefront of tax compliance and automation, Avalara simplifies the complexities of determining the taxability of goods and services across jurisdictions within countries and in cross-border transactions.
We are actively seeking talented AI & Machine Learning engineers who are driven by a passion for applying their expertise to tackle challenging problems. In this role, you will be part of a dynamic team dedicated to the development and implementation of state-of-the-art models for the classification of Harmonized System (HS) codes. HS codes are critical for international trade, and accurate classification of products or services to a large hierarchy of HS codes is essential for determining correct tax rates, duties, and compliance with trading regulations.
Your responsibilities will encompass the full lifecycle of Machine Learning model development—from conceptualization and data pre-processing to model training, evaluation, and deployment. This position demands a blend of technical prowess in the fields of AI & Machine Learning and a deep-seated understanding of software development practices where you'll work closely with a cross-functional team that includes tax experts, data scientists, and software developers to ensure our HS code classification systems are performant and accurate.

This position demands a blend of technical prowess in the fields of AI & Machine Learning and a deep-seated understanding of software development practices where you'll work closely with a cross-functional team that includes tax experts, data scientists, and software developers to ensure our HS code classification systems are performant and accurate.
- Develop and deploy AI & Machine Learning models specifically tailored for HS code classification, focusing on increasing accuracy across various chapters in the HS code taxonomy.
- Conduct in-depth analysis, feature engineering and optimization to improve model performance.
- Make informed data-driven decisions by interpreting test results and performance metrics to help steer experimental efforts.
- Follow best practices and established standards for the development and deployment of REST APIs, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
- Build on top of the foundational MLOps framework for efficient model deployment, dataset versioning, and managing the entire model lifecycle.
- Leverage best practices in software development, including Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) along with appropriate functional and unit testing in place.
- Write, review, and maintain high-quality code that meets industry standards, contributing to the project's technical excellence.
- Lead code review sessions, ensuring good code quality and documentation.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
- Demonstrated prowess in AI & Machine Learning, with a particular focus on hierarchical classification algorithms, Generative AI and their application in real-world scenarios.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with capability to navigate complexities with the data and systems.
- Drive innovation by researching and applying the latest technologies and methodologies in machine learning and software development.
- Proficiency in developing and debugging software with a preference for Python, though familiarity with additional programming languages is highly valued and encouraged.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams.
- 5+ years of experience in building Machine Learning models and deploying them in production environments as part of creating solutions to complex customer problems.
- Proficiency working in cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, GCP), Machine Learning frameworks, and software development best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to keep up with technological innovations in AI & ML and apply them in a fast-paced work environment.
- Deep understanding of AI (incl. GenAI), ML, algorithms, design patterns, and data structures.
- Good analytical, design and debugging skills.
