Pay rate: $20/hr

About Us

Shelter House was established in 1981 as a grassroots responder to the homelessness crisis in Fairfax County. Since the organization's inception, we have adapted and grown to meet community needs while working in partnership with government agencies, private partners, and community members.

Today, Shelter House is a successful nonprofit organization of more than 200 employees committed to preventing and ending homelessness and domestic violence. Last year, our compassionate team changed the lives of nearly 4,000 individuals, half of whom were children.

About the Role

The Residential Coordinator provides essential 24-hour awake coverage and supervision of the domestic violence shelter. This role serves as the lead staff member on shift and the first point of contact for client needs and support. Responsibilities include crisis intervention, facilities management, front desk operations, and maintaining a safe, supportive living environment for shelter residents.

The Residential Coordinator plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both shelter residents and Shelter House property.

Responsibilities

Ensure the safe functioning of the shelter and maintain a secure environment for clients.

Monitor calls and inquiries while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Answer crisis calls from the Fairfax County Domestic Violence Hotline and complete safety plans and needs assessments.

Maintain the daily shelter log by documenting client interactions and significant events.

Collaborate with case managers to support client service plans and communicate client progress.

Accompany clients to court and other appointments.

Complete thorough shift exchanges with incoming and outgoing staff.

Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with agency best practices.

Assess and provide for clients' basic needs, including distributing household supplies and toiletries.

Preserve the dignity and confidentiality of all clients.

Respond appropriately during emergencies, including evacuations and medical situations.

Conduct client assessments and intakes for individuals seeking emergency shelter.

Assist with medication delivery and security procedures.

Attend staff meetings and required trainings.

Follow all Shelter House policies and procedures.

Report to work during emergency situations, including inclement weather.

Demonstrate Shelter House's iCARE values in all interactions.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

High school diploma or GED

Two or more years of experience in human services

Ability to build positive working relationships with clients and coworkers

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field

Experience serving survivors of domestic violence

Experience working in a residential setting

Current CPR and First Aid certification

Physical Requirements

Annual TB test required

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods

Ability to lift 10–20 pounds
