At BETA Technologies, we apply our intellectual curiosity, passion for aviation, and commitment to sustainability toward a shared mission of revolutionizing electric aviation. Regardless of the position one holds, each team member brings their talent and desire to positively impact the environment and lives of others in a refreshing, vibrant, and inclusive culture.
We are seeking an engineer to lead the Advanced Materials and Processes team. This role will lead a cross-functional team responsible for developing new materials and processes from initial conceptualization through low-rate initial production. It requires that the team member develop an intimate understanding of the aircraft system requirements to effectively develop and implement materials and/or processes that solve for the goals of the business. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in the development of new materials and process technologies. The candidate should possess deep experience in one or more manufacturing technologies, including, but not limited to, filament winding, automated fiber placement, resin transfer molding, compression molding, injection molding, resin casting, metal additive manufacturing, forging, metal casting, stamping, welding, conventional spray coating, thermal spray coating, and electroplating.
As a member of the Advanced Materials and Processes team, you will collaborate with a broad range of team members to deliver new technologies that will enable Beta to achieve profitable full rate production. This position offers the possibility to learn something new every day and contribute to the future of aviation.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
Establish a framework that enables concurrent development of new materials and processes in parallel with system design from technology readiness level 1 through 7
Maintain a materials and processes development road map for the upcoming 5 years
Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, systems and certification teams to prioritize technology development projects that reduce time to full rate production and profitability
Become intimately familiar with the materials and manufacturing processes that solve for each aircraft system and collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to identify products that could benefit from their implementation
Conduct research in key areas of interest to further promote new technology concept generation
Set up and manage the materials development laboratory to enable rapid materials and processes development
Prepare technology development proposals that detail the business need, development plan, risk mitigation plan, project cost, and return on investment of introducing the new technology and obtain approval from stakeholders
Lead materials and/or process development projects from conception through technology readiness level 7
Support manufacturing and production teams after transition of ownership for newly developed technologies
Review production data after the introduction of new technology and report on the observed benefit.
Mentor team members and foster extreme ownership among the team
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering or another engineering field
Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, or high-rate production.
Strong background in new product introduction (NPI).
Proficiency in one or more materials and process categories including, but not limited to, the following: metallics, ceramics, polymers, composites, filament winding, automated fiber placement, resin transfer molding, compression molding, injection molding, resin casting, metal additive manufacturing, forging, metal casting, stamping, welding, conventional spray coating, thermal spray coating, and electroplating
Experience leading cross-functional teams
Experience in scaling production, integrating new products, and driving cost reduction
Experience performing material evaluations utilizing common materials laboratory techniques, including, but not limited to, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis
Familiarity with FAA Part 21 production requirements and quality systems is a plus
Strong ability to write detailed technical reports and communicate findings effectively
Data-driven decision maker, using analytics to guide process improvements
Ability to work hard to meet our ambitious goals and tight deadlines
Ability to remain self-motivated after repeated failures until the project achieves success
