About Banksia Ward - Mental Health

Banksia Ward is a dynamic 16-bed inpatient unit dedicated to supporting young people aged 13 to 18 years who are experiencing a range of mental health challenges.

 

About the Role

 

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a part-time ongoing position (64 hours per fortnight) within the Banksia Ward education team, where you’ll play a key role in leading, inspiring, and developing our nursing team.

With your advanced clinical expertise and passion for education you will role model and promote excellence in mental health nursing practice, fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning.

In this dynamic Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) role, you’ll lead an innovative transition program, supporting up to three Registered Nurses as they make the transition from general or paediatric nursing to Mental Health Nursing. You’ll have the unique opportunity to shape the program and influence how our future mental health nurses grow and thrive.

In addition, you’ll provide ongoing guidance to strengthen and sustain emerging programs within Banksia.

 

 

What you'll achieve:

 

  • Contribute to a new transition to mental health program, and play a pivotal role in shaping its delivery
  • Work alongside new and existing staff to deliver excellent mental health nursing care
  • Develop and engage high quality, reflective group and individual clinical supervision for nursing staff
  • Demonstrate a commitment to your clinical progression 
  • Contribute to research opportunities by evaluating and report on the effectiveness of nursing workforce education and training programs

 

Classification for this position will range from Grade 4 Year 1 (NP75) to Grade 4 Year 3 (NP77) (FTE base salary $112,465.6 to $121,113.2 per annum, plus superannuation).

 

What you’ll bring to the role:

 

Essential

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered though the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA)
  • Minimum of five years’ clinical experience, ideally within a mental health or acute care setting.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing, or completion of a specialist undergraduate Mental Health Nursing program.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills – both written and verbal – with the ability to adapt your approach, build rapport, and foster a psychologically safe and supportive environment

 

Desirable

  • Extensive experience in acute adolescent mental health, demonstrating confidence and expertise in managing complex clinical presentations.
  • Strong knowledge and application of contemporary theories and evidence-based practices in mental health care, including managing challenging behaviours.
  • Experience in clinical education, with a demonstrated ability to support, mentor, and develop the knowledge and skills of nursing staff.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and a passion for developing others through education and training.
  • Preceptorship experience, with the ability to mentor and support staff and students in their clinical learning.
  • Proficiency in digital literacy, including strong computer skills and experience using learning management systems.
