About the Department

The Sandhills Community College Recruiter & GEAR UP NC Success Coach works with the Director of Student Life and Recruitment to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the college’s recruitment initiatives and serves as the GEAR UP NC Success Coach. This position also serves as the face of the college in both middle and high schools and in the communities of Moore and Hoke County. The Sandhills Community College Recruiter & GEAR UP NC Success Coach works closely with area middle/high school teachers and counselors to help build relationships with students prior to their graduation from middle/high school. The Sandhills Community College Recruiter & GEAR UP NC Success Coach will also work with teachers and counselors to set up dedicated office hours, tours, classroom visits, and events throughout the school year. In addition to high school recruitment, The Sandhills Community College Recruiter will work to build relationships in the community through attending community events, building relationships with employers and civic organizations, and through print materials shared at BPAC events. In addition to attending events, the Sandhills Community College Recruiter will work to build communication strategies to students, and this position will work to create intentional, engaging events for potential students on the Sandhills campuses. 
As the GEAR UP NC Success Coach, this position works to support first-year college students from target high schools. Success Coaches will provide high-quality, high-touch coaching, providing accountability, and facilitating successful personal development. Coaches are expected to complete various coach training programs, engage in observation, and debrief processes, and complete certifications while developing and fine-tuning the art and science of coaching. The GEAR UP Success Coach will encourage interest in postsecondary education and build support for student success. Finally, this position will also serve as a support role for the Sandhills Community College student life department during peak times.

  • Coordinate the day-to-day traditional middle/high school and community recruitment efforts and strategy to include communication and event planning.
  • Manage the ordering, organization, and inventory of recruitment materials and promotional items. 
  • Make personal phone calls, texts, and emails to prospective students to aid with the enrollment process.
  • Maintain the Request for Information form in Element451 for perspective students
  • Oversee recruitment strategies and outreach through Element451.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Moore and Hoke County middle/high school teachers and counselors. 
  • Learn and stay current with all SCC program information, requirements, and employment trends.
  • Meet with all SCC program coordinators/chairs annually to build relationships and to learn program updates for recruiting purposes.
  • Work with Sandhills Community College Promise, CCR and CCP teams for recruitment partnership opportunities.
  • Manage all aspects of the Student Ambassador Program, including the recruitment, selection, training, scheduling, and ongoing supervision of student ambassadors who represent the college at events, tours, and outreach activities
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student ambassadors to coordinate and conduct intentional campus tours for prospective students, school groups, and community partners. 
  • Coordinate, organize, and represent Sandhills at various off-campus community events, including but not limited to SpringFest, Pinehurst BBQ Festival, Buggy Festival, and local holiday parades.
  • Build and maintain relationships with area businesses and civic organizations for partnership opportunities for intentional recruitment of non-traditional students.  
  • Work with the staff of the SCC BPAC to provide marketing/recruitment materials to patrons. 
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental faculty meetings to increase information sharing and monitor objectives and goals for recruitment.
  • Serves as the point of contact for all recruitment opportunities and events between all departments on campus that may be working with students and in the community.
  • Co-host major campus-wide events that blend recruitment and student life
  • Support Student Life efforts by attending on-campus student life events at the Moore and Hoke campuses.
  • Collaborate on outreach strategies and ensure continuity from recruitment to engagement 
  • Attend and participate in GEAR UP NC meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Build trusting relationships with a diverse student population by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, motivating, and informative coaching sessions.
  • Coach students on developing a plan to achieve their academic and career goals by assessing values/goals, needs, and obstacles.
  • Conduct student programming to aid in the retention of GEAR UP students while following all GEAR UP policies and allowances.
  • Manage confidential information and provide accurate student information in the contact management system(s).
  • Contact and schedule coaching sessions with students, as needed.
  • Utilize online programs, such as EDUmetric, to assist in accountability documentation and reporting. 
  • Provide accurate and direct feedback to Access & Success Manager to receive assistance and foster continuous improvement. 
  • Project, assess and report on GEAR UP NC student cohort’s likelihood to retain

Minimum Qualifications

Required education and experience:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  3. Strong interpersonal skills, allowing effective communication with diverse student groups, faculty, and staff
  4. Proven self-starter and comfortable working independently.
  5. Organizational abilities, with the capability to manage multiple tasks and event logistics efficiently.
  6. Creativity and innovation for event planning and promotional strategies tailored to a diverse student population
  7. Proficiency in using social media platforms and basic graphic design tools for event promotion
  8. Team-oriented mindset, willing to collaborate effectively within a team environment
  9. Experience working with high school and/or college-age students.
  10. Knowledge of college services including financial aid and degree completion is necessary.
Preferred education and experience:
  1. Experience working in a higher education environment
  2. Experience in event planning, student leadership, or related fields
