About the Department
Join our Library team and play a key role in supporting a department that proudly serves the residents of Cumberland County and its surrounding communities. Our libraries provide access to diverse materials, resources, and innovative programs that enrich and empower the public. As a Custodian, you will help maintain clean, safe, and well-functioning library facilities through daily building and grounds upkeep. Your efforts will ensure that every visitor and staff member enjoys a welcoming, comfortable, and secure environment.
Position Duties
- Cleans, dusts, and wipes furniture; cleans glass doors/windows/stainless steel at entrances, sweeps, mops, or vacuum floors and stairs
- Empty/cleans wastebaskets and trash containers including exterior trash cans, replaces bags and disposes of trash in proper manner, refills restroom dispensers
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms using established practices and procedures. Replenishes supplies on a daily or as needed basis
- Uses, cleans and maintains power equipment and hand tools, vacuum and carpet cleaners, brooms, mops, squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc; vacuums and shampoos carpets
- Washes walls, shelves, mirrors, inside and outside windows and equipment; inspects and maintains exterior walls and grounds from debris. Uses ladders when required in work assignments
- Assists with the setup of meetings and events at the library
- Performs exterior cleaning and related activities such as removing trash, snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas around the building using appropriate tools or small power equipment when necessary
- Performs minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs such as tightening screws or hammering a nail, plunging a toilet or sink and tightening screws in cover faces to electrical outlets or switches
- Requests janitorial supplies for the location you are working to keep supplies properly stocked
- Attends emergencies or accidental spills when necessary

- Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and materials used in custodial work
- Knowledge of proper handling and disposal procedures for hazardous materials and bloodborne pathogens
- Skill in using basic computer applications for email and electronic timesheet completion
- Ability to observe and follow all safety requirements related to cleaning solutions and chemicals
- Ability to operate and clean vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, buffers, and related tools safely and effectively
- Ability to perform physical labor
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with co-workers
- Ability to perform minor building repairs
Conditions of Employment:
Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
