The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Energy Team is committed to implementing energy management best practices across NYPL’s portfolio of buildings to help the city meet its ambitious emissions reduction and energy goals. NYPL is working to reduce building emissions by 49% by 2025 and 86% by 2030 (compared to 2006 levels), culminating in full decarbonization by 2050. The Energy Team works to track overall energy usage and identify energy-saving opportunities in buildings, implement energy-efficient operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, and oversee the delivery of energy-efficiency retrofit projects.
- The initiatives being advanced by the NYPL’s Energy Team. Provide strategic and technical insight into the energy savings opportunities that may be most appropriate.
- Day-to-day energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions research, data management, analysis, and reporting. Lead and/or support comprehensive reporting to NYPL leadership and other City and external stakeholders.
- All utility and energy data analysis, requests, and communications.
- Staff to identify opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency and sustainability, and how to execute such measures.
- Energy efficiency and building operations best practices by hosting Demand Response (DR) events throughout NYPL.
- Cooling center activation and NYPL’s essential role in designating its branch locations as official cooling centers throughout New York City
- New and emerging trends in energy efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization.
- How to be a resource/subject matter expert on the NYPL’s energy management and sustainability work.
- Data quality and accuracy for reporting, including building data, energy consumption, and GHG emissions progress. Enhance NYPL’s participation and performance in real-time metering, Demand Response programs and as Cooling Centers.
- The ability of NYPL to provide patrons and staff with a safe and welcoming environment.
- Understand how NYPL is organized and physically laid out
- Understand the specific goals and role of the Energy Team and Facilities Operations team in relation to other departments
- Know their departmental contacts
- Begin to perform inspections and assessments of NYPL branch libraries
- Attain working fluency with all available NYPL data and databases, actively maintaining and updating these systems as assigned.
- Independently develop and produce high-quality presentations, technical reports, and grant write-ups in support of objectives.
- Establish and manage comprehensive documentation protocols for key processes and systems.
- Train others on energy conservation and sustainability
- Perform inspections and assessments independently
- Provide support in technical calculations and analysis to assist NYPL project implementation.
- Manage NYPL energy training and outreach efforts and assist with the development of NYPL’s heat, light, and power (HLP) budget.
- Perform the day-to-day energy and GHG emissions reductions research, data management, analysis, and reporting
- Support local law reporting compliance efforts, including for Local Law 84 (benchmarking), Local Law 101 (carbon capital budgeting), and Local Law 24 (solar PV potential)
- Conduct monthly energy billing review and analysis, investigate and correct potential billing errors, and determine the root causes of changes in energy usage and demand
- Perform site visits and inspections as assigned
- Handle NYPL utility account management, including requesting DEM to open, close, and transfer accounts
- Provide analytical, coordination, and administrative support for participation in real-time metering and Demand Response (DR) programs, including communication of DR events
- Support the management of energy funds and contracts, including processing and execution of Intra-City agreements and budget modification forms
- Maintain and manage all NYPL’s Cooling Center data in real-time
- Manage NYPL energy training and outreach efforts, promoting currently available training and deploying Library-wide awareness seminars
- Prepare high-quality reports, presentations, and communication materials
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering (civil, mechanical, or facilities), applied science, research and policy, public administration, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience in energy analysis, research, energy management, sustainability, engineering, or equivalent experience in a STEM field.
- Excellent mathematical, statistical, and data management skills
- Ability to analyze and present complex data sets using the City’s databases, Microsoft Excel, Salesforce, etc.
- Aptitude for energy conversion calculations, including weather normalization
- Strong writing, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills
- Knowledge of new and emerging trends in the area of energy efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and business relationships effectively
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Building Operator Certification – Level 1; and/or LEED AP credentials are preferred
