Performs technical and manual work in the maintenance, care, and cleaning of school buildings and facilities. The District Head Custodian serves as a working lead, demonstrating leadership by example and performing hands-on maintenance and custodial tasks alongside Utility Technicians. This position supervises small crews (2–5 personnel) and ensures that school facilities remain clean, safe, and operational. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager.
Qualification Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Demonstrated experience leading small maintenance or custodial crews (2–5 personnel).

Essential Functions
- Supervises and participates in maintenance work as needed, including electrical, carpentry, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and grounds departments.
- Supervises, instructs, and assists with assembling, setting up, and moving furniture.
- Directs and participates in cleaning tasks and inspection of cleaning equipment.
- Assists with warehouse deliveries and related logistics.
- Oversees and assists with minor plumbing repairs, replacing light bulbs, and ceiling tile replacement.
- Performs and supervises cleaning of building interiors, exteriors, and surrounding grounds as needed.
- Supervises and participates in light-duty painting and general facility upkeep.
- Performs other related duties as required or directed by the Facilities Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, grounds maintenance, and custodial methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and complete work orders and maintenance documentation.
- Strong leadership and teamwork skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, and school personnel.
Physical Requirements
- Occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Frequent activities include standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and manual handling.
- Occasional activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Requires standard visual acuity and vocal communication to convey detailed instructions accurately and clearly.
- Requires hearing ability sufficient to receive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Involves operating machines, motor vehicles, and equipment, as well as visual inspections and minor assembly work.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor weather, and occasional exposure to mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, temperature extremes, and vibration.
- Work environment often includes moderate to loud noise levels (e.g., grounds maintenance, machinery, traffic).
Special Requirements and Certifications
- Technical degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
- Trade license in a related field preferred (e.g., HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing).
