About the Role

An opportunity currently exists for an Allied Health Assistant to join the Physiotherapy team. This position is responsible for assisting physiotherapists to provide high quality clinical management of patients in the acute orthopaedic and neurosciences units at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. In particular, this incudes assisting patient mobility practice, supervising patient exercise and therapy across both individual and group sessions, and other duties as directed.

Classification for this position will be IN29 ($31.65 per hour).

Duties include

  • Implementation of treatment as directed including exercises, mobility, ADL retraining and gait aid provision
  • Accurate treatment monitoring and evaluation of patients programs and conditions
  • Maintain effective communication with all team members including reporting back to the supervising physiotherapist regarding patient management and progress.
  • Administration duties to assist in the daily operation of the Physiotherapy department.

Position Description

3. LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
The SVHM Physiotherapy department provides service to St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (Fiztroy), St George’s Hospital (Kew), Caritas Christi (Kew), Berangarra Residential Care (Kew), Prague House (Kew), Port Phillip Prison (Truganina) and Auburn House (Hawthorn East) The Physiotherapy Department works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide assessment, treatment and a range of therapeutic services to optimise patient care and maximise function. The Department is committed to fostering excellence in clinical care and ongoing education. This position is located predominately at the Fitzroy Campus of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, working in a sub-acute clinical area determined by the Allied Health Assistant Portfolio holder; and cares for a diverse range of patients who are admitted under the units serviced by the Physiotherapy department. This position could be required to rotate across clinical services, depending on service demand.


4. POSITION PURPOSE
Accountable to the Physiotherapy Manager and the senior clinician/grade 2 physiotherapist in the area to which you are working, this position is responsible for assisting the physiotherapists to providing high quality physiotherapy management of patients, in particular mobilising patients, supervising patient exercise sessions, conducting exercise classes, as well as other duties as directed.


5. POSITION DUTIES
The delivery of the highest standard of physiotherapy services to the patients at Fitzroy incorporating the mission and values of the Sisters of Charity.

  • Ascertain the appropriate information regarding the patient from the supervising physiotherapist.
  • Implementation of treatment as directed including exercises, mobility, gait aid provision
  • Coordination of Gym program as directed
  • Safe and timely portering of patients as required
  • Accurate treatment monitoring and evaluation of patients programs and conditions
  • Report back to the supervising physiotherapist regarding patient’s progress
  • Monitoring, ordering and cleaning of gait aids
  • Active participation in relevant on going education and learning opportunities and applying relevant new knowledge.
  • Attendance at and contribution to relevant meetings
  • Cover other allied health assistant staff as required due to leave / workloads 
  • Sourcing and ordering of equipment in timely and accurate manner
  • Records accurate statistics within the last working day of each pay fortnight or as app

6. INCUMBENT OBLIGATIONS
General

  • Perform duties of the position to best of their ability and to a standard acceptable to SVHM.

  • Collaborate and clearly communicate with patients/clients and the healthcare team.
  • Participate in clinical risk management and continuous quality improvement activities as part of day-to-day work.
  • Ensure consumers receive information in an appropriate and accessible format.
  • Actively support consumers to make informed decisions about their treatment and ongoing care.
  • Ensure consumers are aware of their rights responsibilities and how to provide feedback.
  • Protect the health and safety of self and others, complying with all health and safety related policies, procedures and directions.
  • Complete required Fire and Emergency Training annually
  • Complete required Workplace Culture and Equity Training annually.
  • Attend general hospital orientation within 3 months of commencement.

8. SELECTION CRITERIA
8.1 ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education:
• Accredited Allied Health Assistant’s Course or
• A degree in Human Movement, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education 


8.2 OTHER NON ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Skills and competencies which the incumbent must possess:
• Commitment to the values and health care philosophy of the Sisters of Charity
• Commitment to the Code of Conduc
