NETWORK SPECIALIST II
Purpose Statement:
The job of Network Specialist II is done for the purpose/s of designing, installing, upgrading, and maintaining LAN and WAN networks, Internet access, Voice over IP Phones and legacy phone systems, voicemail, IP Intercom, COAX, and security camera network; troubleshooting network hardware and software issues; training staff on data, phone and voicemail systems; and providing network user support and assistance.
This job reports to Director of Technical Services
Essential Functions
• Assesses malfunctions of network hardware and/or software applications (e.g. operating systems, applications, protocols, routers, cable, etc.) for the purpose of determining appropriate actions to maintain operations.
• Develops installation, configuration and maintenance plans (e.g. site location WAN/LAN; analog phones and VOIP; video security cameras, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district distributed processing requirements.
• Installs computer, network equipment, and cabling (e.g. CATS, CAT6, fiber optics, etc.) for the purpose of providing voice, video and data transmission services.
• Meets with site and district personnel and committees for the purpose of conferring, recommending and planning network installations and upgrades.
• Monitors a variety of computer systems and functions (e.g. LAN/WAN connections, network traffic, performance, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that District computer systems are secure and resources are utilized effectively.
• Prepares written materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
• Repairs operating systems and network equipment (e.g. servers, data communications hardware, lines, modems, network devices, switches, routers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in a safe and functional operating condition.
• Responds to inquiries from internal and external sources (e.g. teachers, administrators, staff, vendors, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction.
• Trains users and associates on data, phone and voicemail systems for the purpose of ensuring effective and efficient use of available resources.
• Transports a variety of items (e.g. equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of providing materials at job site or transporting equipment for repair.
Other Functions
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in installation and maintenance of voice, video and data transmission; and adhering to safety practices.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: principles, theories and practices pertaining to voice, video and data networks; and current, legacy and emerging operating systems, network standards, routing and route protocols, VLAN, WLAN, LAN/WAN hardware design and VOIP concepts.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; working under time constraints; adapting to changing work priorities; displaying mechanical aptitude; communicating with persons of varied technical expertise; setting priorities; working under time constraints; and working nonstandard hours.

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions and in a clean atmosphere.

Salary Info
Classified Salary Range: 64 - Plus paid holidays, vacations, sick time. Also includes great benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Flex-Pay)
Comments and Other Information
It is important to note, to become an employee of Grossmont Union High School District, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs $72 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost).
