General Statement of Job
Under limited supervision, the Teacher at the William R. Byars Jr. Treatment Center provides high-quality, trauma-informed instruction to students receiving psychiatric and behavioral treatment services. The Teacher designs and delivers developmentally appropriate, individualized lessons that promote academic progress, social-emotional growth, and successful transitions back to community or home schools.
The Teacher works as part of a multidisciplinary team—including mental health professionals, residential staff, and administrators—to ensure that educational programming aligns with students’ treatment goals and individualized education plans (IEPs). The teacher must be skilled in trauma-informed instruction and able to support students with emotional and behavioral regulation needs while maintaining a structured, predictable learning environment. Reports to the site Assistant Principal.
Minimum Requirements
Requires a valid South Carolina teaching certificate or eligibility for South Carolina teaching certificate in the appropriate certified area. Experience working with children in an educational setting is desirable.
A South Carolina teaching certification in Multi-Categorical (K–12) is preferred; Emotional Disabilities (K–12) or Specific Learning Disabilities (K–12) acceptable. Experience working with students with emotional/behavioral needs and demonstrated use of trauma-informed, relationship-centered instructional strategies preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of remaining standing for extended periods of time, writing on a chalkboard, stooping, kneeling and crouching, and some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12 to 20 pounds).
