A Day in the Life

Are you a seasoned engineer with a passion for driving cross-functional collaboration and delivering impactful results? Medtronic is seeking an experienced Senior Principal Design Automation Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for manufacturing process automation in medical devices manufacturing. This position will work across manufacturing sites, driving design, development, managing cross-functional teams and flawless execution of automation projects.

As a key leader, you’ll oversee project execution, technology sourcing and concept development while ensuring timelines, budgets, and objectives are met. This position requires exceptional leadership skills, the ability to influence stakeholders, and a strategic mindset to navigate challenges and drive successful outcomes for the Operations Innovation Automation Team in flight and pipeline projects over the East and Caribbean Regions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with Engineering, Operations, and Quality to produce conceptual mechanical/automation designs with a strong level of understanding of Manufacturing processes, Electrical and Software controls
  • Develop and drive best practices around Automation equipment design principals and standards, software change control, and process control for consistent and scalable application
  • Develop, build, and test Designs and concepts for feasibility
  • Develop and apply computer aided design (CAD) software engineering methods, theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of technical problems.
  • Create and provide equipment specifications to vendors for quoting automated and manual equipment.
  • Review equipment quotes, lead design reviews, and work with project teams to provide custom assembly equipment.
  • Assess architecture and hardware limitations, plan technical projects in the design and development of CAD software.
  • Define and select new approaches and implementation of CAD software engineering applications and design specifications and parameters.
  • Prepare design specifications, analysis and recommendations for presentation and approval.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus 10 years of relevant Engineering experience OR
  • Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR
  • PhD with 6 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience across numerous roles/functions within Manufacturing, Engineering, Operations with demonstrated success in each area
  • Mastery in manufacturing process, mechanical interaction and implementation of highly automated systems in high labor areas.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical test system troubleshooting, maintenance, and operation.
  • Validation Experiences (IQ,OQ,PQ), FAT, SAT, Risk Analysis, FMEA and root cause analysis.
  • Experience with PLC’s /Safety PLC’s (SLC/CompactLogix and ControlLogix Platforms) and supporting development software
  • Experience with HMI’s and associated development software
  • Experience in 6 axis joint and SCARA robotics and associated development software
  • Experience with vision systems
  • Must have experience in troubleshooting of control systems software, I/O issues, controls/electromechanical equipment, DC Drives, VFD's, Servo Drives, PLC's and PC based
  • Solid experience in trouble shooting equipment using conventional diagnostic tools and PLC software.
  • Experience with design, validation and deployment of large-scale automation solutions.
  • Experience in leading large-scale change management
  • Demonstrated use of Lean Manufacturing principles to achieve results
  • Ability to lead cross functional teams as well as be a team member and hold people accountable to specific time-bound objectives
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$148,800.00 - $223,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
