About the Department
Directs and administers the college wide employee safety, fire safety and environmental programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These requirements are a representation of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title and shall not be construed as an exhaustive list of specific duties and responsibilities. Management may direct employees to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Develops and maintains comprehensive college-wide employee safety, fire safety and environmental programs which incorporate current practices and philosophies adopted as the most effective in preventing injuries, occupational diseases, damage to equipment, materials and the environment. Ensure compliance with relevant Department of Labor and Employment Security (OSHA standards), Department of Education, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection rules and regulations.
- Supervises safety and environmental staff assigned to carry out the objectives of the employee safety, fire safety, and environmental programs.
- Oversees the college-wide comprehensive safety and casualty inspection program to ensure compliance with SREF, NFPA 1 & 101, OSHA, ADA, local emergency operations centers, (FDLE, Florida Department Law Enforcement), and Industrial Safety and Health regulations.
- Coordinates compliance with federal, state and county safety and environmental rules and regulations.
- Consults with college staff to provide guidance concerning safety and environmental matters.
- Coordinates the implementation of safety and health training programs as identified by the College’s Risk Management and Loss Prevention Committee.
- Coordinates with the Continuing Education Department the training of appropriate college personnel as identified on the Safety Training Guide.
- Assists Provosts, Deans, Directors and supervisors in identifying real or potential threats to employee safety and health, evaluates the risks to employee safety and health, and recommends or assists in developing procedures and the selection of equipment and materials to correct unsafe conditions and practices with the emphasis practically and cost efficiency.
- Manages College-wide security contract.
- Conducts follow-up investigations where required to ensure that unsafe conditions or practices have been corrected.
- Periodically evaluates compliance with safety program by making inspections of facilities for conditions and practices, which may threaten employee safety and health.
- Develops and maintains a safety policy and procedures manual for use by all college employees.
- Serves on the college-wide Risk Management and Loss Prevention Committee and serves as ex-official on all campus Safety Committees.
- Coordinates with College’s liaison to the Florida Community College Risk Management Consortium guidelines in redeveloping and maintaining the College’s Safety Manual.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field with three (3) years of experience in safety, fire safety, environmental programs in the development and evaluation of loss prevention initiatives, preferably from a governmental or similar public sector agency;
- Or two (2) year degree in a related field with five (5) years of experience in the previously described areas;
- Or Standard High School Diploma or GED and Florida State Certification as a fire safety inspector or the ability to achieve a Florida State certification within one (1) Year of employment with seven (7) years of experience in the previously described areas. Degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing
- Ability to lift 50 pounds. Satisfactory back X-ray required
- Ability to climb ladders and perform safety inspections
- Current valid Florida Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record

- Knowledge of the Florida Building Codes
