Mitigation Regional Biologist

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, seeks a highly motivated regional biologist to join our Great Lakes Atlantic Region Mitigation Team. You will work with a team of other biologists, engineers, and land protection professionals to identify, develop, implement, and manage wetland restoration, enhancement and protection projects in Vermont to support DU’s waterfowl and wetlands conservation mission.

This on-site, full-time salaried position will report to the DU Vermont Field Office in Rutland, VT. Working hours will be a balance of office and field work, with the approximate allocation varying seasonally. The position is predominantly in-person but does require periods of travel including overnight trips.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of Ducks Unlimited’s growing mitigation program in the Great Lakes Atlantic Region, the successful candidate will work with state and federal agencies (e.g., Army Corps of Engineers) and other partners on wetland mitigation projects. Workload will be focused on advancing mitigation projects through all phases of delivery from site identification, vetting for restoration potential, acquisition, permitting, construction oversight, monitoring, and adaptive management. Primary geographical focus will be on project delivery in Vermont. The successful candidate may also provide periodic technical and strategic assistance to other mitigation projects, particularly in New York. 

  • Work closely with program manager, other DU staff, and various partners to deliver mitigation projects.
  • Identify new sites and work collaboratively to secure wetland restoration projects.
  • Perform annual monitoring and reporting.
  • Identify adaptive management needs and implement adaptive management plans through oversight and coordination of seasonal staff, volunteers, and subcontractors.
  • Write mitigation plans for wetland restoration projects.
  • Develop and steward collaborative relationships with partnering agencies and organizations, and land trusts.
  • Perform field work which may require strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions.
  • Travel throughout Vermont and periodically out of state for conferences and meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, Environmental Studies, or an applicable related field from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Detail oriented and well organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and budgets.
  • Excellent project management, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to write mitigation plans and monitoring reports.
  • Self-motivated, goal oriented and self-starter.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable with driving vehicles in adverse terrain.
  • Willingness to work safely and independently, occasionally outside of normal business hours, and with minimal supervision in remote work environments.
  • Ability to consistently represent DU in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of state and federal wetland regulations, policies and laws is beneficial.
  • Desirable experience includes seeking out wetland restoration opportunities, wetland mitigation implementation, vegetative sampling protocol, invasive species control, hydrology monitoring, wetland delineation, wetland permitting through state level permitting agencies/ the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state historic preservation office coordination, threatened and endangered species permits, soil and erosion control permits, and project budget management.
