The Director, Sales & Use Tax Audits position will provide direction and advice, based upon exceptional competence and mastery in taxes, on all aspects of the Company and its subsidiaries operations with respect to known, potential, or possible tax affects, including novel and/or non-recurring situations as such relates to sales and use tax audits.

This is determined (a) within generally defined policies and goals based upon broad strategic guidance; and (b) through the application of analytical, interpretive, and constructive thinking in variable situations. This includes developing and implementing new concepts and/or approaches and coordinating their integration into the corporate and operational structure as a whole on an administrative and/or comprehensive basis by implementation of ideas through both primary responsibility and shared participation with others, within and without the tax department, with the ultimate goal of directly increasing the Company's EPS through minimization of tax liabilities. 

Because this role involves access to confidential financial information, the Company has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and to provide similar protections for its clients and potential investments.

Responsibilities

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS 

  • Lead and manage all aspects of sales and use tax audits, from initial inquiry through resolution, including audit defense and negotiation.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strategies and policies to minimize tax liabilities and mitigate audit risk.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and representative for the company with state and local tax authorities.
  • Conduct complex sales and use tax research and analysis to ensure compliance and support audit defense.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including finance, accounting, legal, and IT, to provide expert tax guidance and ensure accurate tax reporting.
  • Monitor and communicate changes in sales and use tax laws and regulations to stakeholders and senior management.
  • Leverage tax technology and automation tools to enhance efficiency and improve tax processes.
  • Represent the company in various professional and public forums related to sales and use tax matters.
  • Assist in the selection of attributes and the development of a tax data lake. 
  • Ability to do legal research on complex state sales and use tax issues.

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

FORMAL EDUCATION: 

Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business. 

Preferred:

  • Master’s in Taxation (MT)
  • Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Certified Public Accountant

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in corporate tax, with significant experience in sales and use tax auditing within a large corporation or public accounting firm.
  • Evident experience in the Conduct of Audits

Preferred:

  • Sales and use tax audits experience

 

TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Highly organized
  • Ability to meet quick deadlines with quality work
  • Ability to manage, lead and inspire a team successfully
  • Adaptable to constant change
  • Must keep current on all Federal, State and Local tax law changes

  • Advanced Excel skills
