About the Department

The Maintenance Mechanic position is under the supervision of the Executive Director of Facilities Operations.  The employee performs general and routine tasks associated with the technical maintenance, physical condition and inspection and repair of the college’s equipment and facilities.  

Position Duties

  • Participate in the general maintenance of the college facilities. Continuously inspect facilities to ensure campuses are provided with a well-maintained environment conducive to the learning process.
  • Preventative Maintenance and Repair of HVAC equipment and controls, plumbing fixtures, electrical systems, structures, infrastructure and other major facilities systems as needed. This includes but is not limited to: troubleshooting equipment in the areas of Heating and Cooling, Electrical, Fire Alarm, Plumbing and Building Automation as well as meeting with vendors, requisitioning parts and materials, cleaning, oil, grease, change belts, filters, coordinating/performing/project managing installation of repairs or replacements, testing systems, and any task associated with keeping college operating systems in working condition.  
  • Maintain Facilities including flooring, ceiling, walls, doors, windows, roofing, painting, sealing, etc. to effectively keep buildings operational, safe and appealing.  
  • Frequent travel to all operating locations to perform PM duties and repairs.
  • Observe all safety measures when working with electrical, chemicals, paints, epoxy and use PPE including respirators and safety attire as required.
  • Maintain service logs as necessary on projects, repairs and equipment
  • Move furniture, make deliveries, assemble items (bookcases, storage units, desks, etc.), mount items, repair furniture, cabinetry, countertops, and other similar scopes of work. 
  • Maintain adequate inventories of supplies and equipment necessary to maintain facilities.
  • Report for duty as a member of the inclement weather team during college closings.
  • Maintain locks, signs, keys, door hardware and building signage and other locksmith duties as assigned.
  • Unlock buildings each working day and check areas for obvious problems of maintenance, housekeeping, or security nature.
  • Assist with setups and teardowns for college events and participate in annual college graduation – as needed.
  • Mechanic, as needed, will assist with grounds duties, housekeeping duties, deliveries, or any other duty assigned to support the mission of the Facilities team.  
  • Assist inspectors and maintain safety and building inspections records of weekly/monthly and annual reports to include vehicles, boilers, pressure vessels, AED’s, eyewash stations, exit light, fire alarm, emergency lights, elevators, backflow prevention devices, generator, pump station, man lifts, and utilities.
  • Utilize technical tools to access facilities systems to aid in troubleshooting and repair, tools include multimeter, transit, HVAC manifold gauges, drain camera, circuit locator, refrigerant leak detector, and telephone butt set.
  • Use a personal computer to close work orders, send emails, research material, and complete safety training.
  • Operate heavy equipment to include tractor, forklift, scissor lift, aerial lift, and skid steer loader; maintain certifications for heavy equipment operation where required.  
  • Report for duty after hours, weekend and holiday as needed to support facilities operations.
  • Perform other tasks that cannot be readily foreseen or anticipated as requested by the Executive Director of Facilities Operations or the Administration.

Minimum Qualifications

Required: 

  • High school graduate
  • Five years of broad-based general maintenance work including painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC and welding.
  • Experience with building construction practices and using hand and power tools.
Preferred: 
  • Additional certificates for HVAC, electrical, plumbing and OSHA certifications.
  • Eight years general maintenance.
