Job Description:

  I.  POSITION SUMMARY

Supervises employees in a filter manufacturing and assembly environment on assigned shift and department(s) to achieve scheduled production volume within acceptable production, quality, and scrap levels.

 II.  DIMENSIONS

Staff :  15 – 40 production or skilled labor employees

III.  NATURE & SCOPE

Champion Laboratories, Inc. is a full-line filter manufacturer with facilities located in Southern Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan, California, Europe, and China.  The sales and marketing operations of Champion Laboratories are headquartered in Albion, IL.  Through the use of a direct sales force, independent manufacturer’s agents, and in some cases direct account responsibility, automotive, light truck, and heavy duty filters and related products are sold and distributed worldwide.

Each site is a multiple shift operation and this position supervises and is responsible for one or more of the departments on his/her assigned shift.  This person reports to a Superintendent or Manager. 

Each department under the incumbent’s realm of responsibility has approximately 15 to

40 employees depending on department and location.  The employees under the incumbent’s direction perform a variety of manufacturing related tasks, including assembly, maintenance, fabrication, tool & die, material handling, etc. 

The incumbent’s responsibilities are carried out through effective supervision of employees, including training and motivation, conflict resolution of employee problems, maintenance of safe work practices, employee performance evaluation, etc.  Discipline procedures are established by Company Policy, and the incumbent is required to maintain these policies with the guidance of the Personnel Department.

This individual is directly responsible for his/her department on the assigned shift but is also expected to coordinate activities with the other shifts in his/her department.  It is the responsibility of this position to maintain a safe working environment and ensure acceptable housekeeping.  This position is not responsible for major repairs or preventive maintenance programs.

Scrap and efficiency levels are tracked and documented on a daily basis.  Incumbent is required to analyze this data for accuracy and recommend or implement corrective procedures. 

Suggestions or recommendations to the actual process are encouraged and entertained.  Minor changes in methods can be attempted on the short term to test feasibility.

Quality must be maintained to the level of the customer satisfaction while maintaining production figures at appropriate rates and manpower at the prescribed levels.  The incumbent does have the authority to cease line operations if warranted due to safety, equipment, manpower, or quality problems.

A major challenge of this position is the motivation and development of a competent workforce to provide quality work and assure customer satisfaction.  

 IV.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide leadership and direction to staff.  Plans and assigns work in support of or to meet daily production schedules within quality levels to control standard costs.

Assures a safe and clean working environment to protect employees from injury.

Ensures employees are properly trained to perform job functions adequately.

Actively engaged with employees in the work area on daily basis to review performance/work status, provide instruction and motivate employees in a positive, professional manner.

Works within accepted practices to ensure cost effective utilization of raw materials and personnel is achieved.

Analyze and implement corrective action for minor issues, escalate larger issues.

Responsible for enforcing adherence to various work rules and/or company policies.

Work closely with other supervisors in an assigned department to achieve the highest efficiency possible from the department.

Maintains various forms of documents and records.
