About the Department
The Road Superintendent manages, organizes, and directs the County Road Maintenance Department
Position Duties
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and may change with or without notice. - Provides leadership and direction to the Road Maintenance Department through management of staff, equipment and projects; establishes priorities and long-range planning, while ensuring effective maintenance and project execution
- Supervises, leads, and develops staff; assigns work, monitors progress, evaluates performance, and provides guidance to support professional growth
- Oversees departmental operations to ensure the efficient delivery of services; defines maintenance standards, establishes schedules, and manages consultant and contractor relationships
- Manages projects and departmental resources, maintains documentation and inventories, and ensures compliance with County, State, and Federal requirements
- Develops bid specifications for equipment and materials; oversees purchasing and inventorying systems
- Oversees work of consultants and contractors, monitors for compliance with contract terms, safety rules and regulations
- Evaluates highway system and infrastructure; monitors traffic patterns and safety trends; determines and prioritizes repair and maintenance needs;
- Collaborates with the County Engineering Director and other stakeholders to coordinate construction and maintenance activities
- Advises County leaders on road maintenance plans and activities; coordinates road maintenance activities with other departments; attends meetings, makes presentations and serves as the principal advisor to County leaders, stakeholders and the public on road maintenance programs
- Responds to emergencies and coordinates County resources according to plans and needs.
- Develops and monitors department budget; prepares special and recurring reports
- Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND seven (7) years of work experience in road construction and maintenance
- Experience working for a government agency
- Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver’s License, or equivalent
- Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
Other Qualifications
- Work is performed in an office setting and an outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather
- Some work is performed on construction sites with exposure to uneven ground, loud noises, chemicals, and construction equipment
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Compensation:
Starting Salary ranges from $125,000-$135,000/annually based on experience and training.
