LECTURER: STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AND MATERIALS

(nGAP)

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

 

 

The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications from South African candidates belonging to designated groups for an nGAP position, to be filled on a full-time basis starting 1 January 2026.

 

The Department has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching in all major fields of civil engineering, including construction materials engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, water quality engineering, urban water management and transport studies. Structural Engineering and Materials is one of the major clusters of teaching and research activities in the Department. It offers undergraduate courses covering mechanics of materials and structures; structural analysis; construction materials; structural design in concrete, steel and timber. The group also offers various postgraduate programmes.

Applications are invited for a permanent full-time post in Structural Engineering and Materials, with a research focus on modern concrete material technology. The incumbent will have the opportunity to join the Concrete Materials and Structural integrity Research Unit and actively contribute to the teaching and research activities of the Department, including the supervision of postgraduate students. In addition to the courses in structural engineering and materials, the successful candidate may also be required to teach general civil engineering courses in the undergraduate curriculum.

 

While applicants with relevant qualifications and academic experience in the broad area of Structural Engineering and Materials will be considered, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrable research and teaching experience in subjects related to modern concrete materials technology and sustainable construction.

 

The nGAP is positioned as a prestigious programme in the sector, and candidates need to demonstrate a passion for pursuing a career as an academic and need to have demonstrated high academic ability.

 

 

Requirements for the post:

 

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • A master’s degree specialising in Structural Engineering and Materials with a 70% pass or above.

 

Candidates without a Master’s degree who are close to completion of their PhD research can be considered.
