What you need to know

  • The primary duty station for this position will be the TTI Headquarters at RELLIS campus. Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent in this position will be required to report full-time to the primary duty station.

  • The salary range for position is commensurate. Final salary will be determined based on the applicant's qualifications and experience.

Job Summary

Under general supervision of Construction Supervisor, assists with research preparations, carries out procedures, prepares and constructs objects and structures, operates equipment, prepares, documents, and/or make-ready test vehicles, operates equipment, and conducts data collection/recording that support research in engineering fields, prepares, installs, and operates recording equipment and mechanical instrumentation that supports research in engineering fields. Continued employment is dependent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

 

Essential Duties

Vehicle and Mechanical Preparation (40%)

Prepare vehicles and mechanical systems for full-scale research experiments

Repair test vehicle engine, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, chassis, body, and other parts as needed

Prepare test vehicle by adding devices necessary to perform crash tests

Fabricate needed parts to conduct transportation research

Prepare test vehicle regarding installation of mechanical/electronic devices as directed

May perform duties of Tow Truck Operator during crash testing

May conduct field surveys, prepare vehicles or mechanical systems, and construct test articles and structures for research activities

 

Experiment Setup and Execution  (20%)

Assist in conducting experiments at the test facility

Conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects

Perform a variety of laboratory or field experiments using various types of equipment and vehicles

Work with Construction Supervisor and/or Test Facilities Manager as test plans are developed

Assist Test Conductor and/or Test Facilities Manager to facilitate test plans

Prepare test site and construct/install the test article as directed

 

Fabrication and Assembly (20%)

Perform necessary bench and floor work in making, finishing, and assembling parts, some of which require the use of measurements to close tolerances.

May perform skilled or semi-skilled work in construction and repair of varied equipment and test articles involving several trade skills

Install required hardware and systems on test facility for crash tests

 

Equipment Maintenance and Calibration (10%)

Maintain shop equipment in good working order

Clean and maintain work area as necessary

Collect and maintain calibration and maintenance data/records on equipment and devices

Perform in-house calibrations on selected electronic instrumentation and other devices

 

Data Collection and Documentation (10%)

Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of routine research; keep detailed records of data

Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data gathering and evaluation

Read, record, compute, and write-up results in accordance with standard procedures

Provide construction, mechanical, and/or electronic assistance as needed to document methods and outcomes

Other assistance as needed with modification to/development of methods

 

Required Education and experience

High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2 year of related work experience in construction and/or mechanical and/or electronics field.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic familiarity with tools and equipment used in construction, mechanical and/or electronic projects.

Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create record gathered data and perform other computer related tasks.

Ability to work cooperatively with others.

Initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision.

Ability to deliver quality results on time.

 

Other Requirements or Other Factors

Must be able to work outside in the elements at the labs testing sites and vehicle preparation areas.

Travel may be required on rare occasions.

Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends may be required on rare occasions.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Trade school with emphasis in construction and/or, mechanics, and/or electronics.

4 years related work experience.

 

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform common office functions.

Ability to frequently communicate with other individuals within the workplace.

Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
