POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
This is a PRN position. Provides comprehensive medico-legal examinations and timely and accurate collection of forensic evidence. Collaborates with physicians, local law enforcement, city & county prosecutors and victim advocates to provide complete care for patients. Ensures safety and maintains chain of evidence.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs a complete forensic exam of the sexual assault patient.
- Demonstrates the ability to appropriately use equipment, including cameras and colposcope in the documentation of injury and collection of evidence.
- Makes appropriate community referrals for the sexual assault patient.
- Identifies emergency medical conditions and make appropriate referrals.
- Communicates with the Emergency Department staff when transferring patients for evaluation and treatment.
- Facilitates communication between Emergency Department staff, patient, victim advocates and law enforcement agency when patient is transferred to the Emergency Department.
- Performs Quality Assurance functions to include: maintenance of chain of evidence, appropriateness of documentation, appropriateness of referrals, preparing and interpreting reports as needed.
- Provides court testimony as needed.
- General Patient Care:
- Involves the patient in making decisions during the medico-legal exam.
- Provides awareness and understanding that there are a variety of emotional responses to violence.
- Encourages the patient to express feelings, concerns and needs as individually appropriate.
- Makes referrals tailored to the needs of each individual presenting to the program.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Possesses a thorough knowledge of the management of the sexual assault patient, the medico-legal examination and the collection of forensic evidence.
- Is able to work collaboratively and effectively with physicians, victim advocates, local law enforcement agencies, city & county prosecutor’s office and the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
- Is able to work independently.
- Demonstrates organizational skills.
- Attends continuing education specific to forensics a minimum of 2 hours per year.
- Participates in on-call rotation with minimum number of five (5) call shifts per month.
- Possesses clear and concise written documentation skills.
- Demonstrates good communication skills.
- Participates in professional organizations including the International Association of Forensic Nurses and the Ohio Chapter of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Most time is spent in an office/clinical environment and involves substantial client contact.
- The individual must be able to speak and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
- The employee may be required to sit for extended periods and may be required to lift as much as 20 pounds.
- A fair amount of time will be spent working on a computer or on the phone.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Registered Nurse with current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Ohio.
- Successful completion of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training and certification.
- Successful completion of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Orientation Program.
- Two continuing education units in forensics completed annually after the first year of work with the SACU Program
