DIESEL TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs repair and preventive maintenance on a small to medium fleet consisting of semi tractors, trailers, automobiles, trucks, tow trucks, on/off road vehicles, and other machinery in a safe, efficient, quality minded and customer focused manner. With direction from Fleet Manager performs repairs to vehicles including: brakes, oil changes, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, electrical systems, and all other assemblies. Driver and customer interaction is friendly, honest, professional, and focused on delivering the best service available in our industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Install or repair accessories.
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
- Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
- Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
- Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
- Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
- Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
- Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
- Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
- Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
- Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
- Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
- Align front ends and suspension systems.
- Follow green operational practices involving conservation of water or energy or reduction of solid waste.
- Adjust or repair computer controlled exhaust emissions devices.
- Maintain or repair vehicles with alternative fuel systems, including biodiesel, hybrid, or compressed natural gas vehicles, and propane.
- Operate grinding equipment.
- Open to painting equipment when necessary.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Able to supervise others
- Open to cross-train and become familiar with other work centers/related companies
- Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of automotive mechanic trade; principles of operation of internal combustion engines; preventative maintenance methods; record keeping; safety practices
- Knowledge of industrial equipment
- Ability to conduct research, analyze, and make recommendations to management
- Must keep shop organized and clean
- Quality assurance a must
- Able to prioritize and work within deadlines
- Able to operate industrial equipment
- Able to stand, bend, and walk intermittently
- Exposure to in/outdoor climate including extreme heat and cold conditions
- Fine hand manipulation and dexterity
- Work well with others
- Class A CDL with HazMat and Tanker endorsements with valid health card is preferred but not required
