Job Summary

The CT X-ray Technologist, under the direction of the Director of Medical Imaging, performs a variety of technical procedures utilizing computed tomography and radiographic imaging to demonstrate cross-sectional anatomy and to detect pathology. Performs procedures utilizing CT scanners, X-ray equipment, patient positioning devices, and computer console systems. Functions using independent judgment, initiative and ingenuity when performing technical procedures. Under direction of the Radiologist, manages and monitors equipment used to obtain images. Organizes diagnostic quality images prior to sending them to the radiologist for interpretation. Requires the ability to work with several groups of patients and physical conditions, to include adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Responsible for delivering high quality service, and to interact appropriately with patients and their representatives, physicians, and co-workers. Will safely manage the environment of care while providing services. Completes any task assigned by management for the improvement of the Imaging Department.


Essential Functions

  • Verifies requisition, orders (initial order), patient history, consents, and verifies the correct exam is ordered. 
  • If needed verifies with Radiologist. 
  • Good working knowledge of RIS (Radiology Information System). 
  • Orders/completes exam and supply charges. 
  • Sends images to PACS and reviews images. 
  • Scans all necessary paperwork prior to review in PACS. 
  • Properly assembles exam images in PACS, requisitions, and previous images before submission to Radiologist for interpretation. 
  • Has appropriate information before consulting Radiologist. 
  • Able to adapt techniques to various imaging situations. 
  • Produces diagnostic quality images. 
  • Does not turn in suboptimal images. 
  • Requests assistance when needed. 
  • Consistently positions correctly with minimal repeats. 
  • Able to get quality images in challenging situations and patients. 
  • Uses correct lifting techniques and obtains assistance when needed to prevent injuries when moving patients to/from bed, wheelchair and imaging tables. 
  • Takes appropriate precautions to prevent patient falls or injury. 
  • Ensures that unstable patients are not left alone. 
  • Transporting patients: look for tubes, catheters, wires, restraints, IVs and other medical devices before attempting to move or transport patients. 
  • Know hospital bed controls. 
  • Returning patients to rooms: bed rails up, restraints in place, IV pumps plugged in, catheter bags are hung, patient is covered and nurse call button is within reach. 
  • Carefully observes contrast injections and contrast injector to prevent infiltrations and recognize reactions; follows contrast dosage guidelines exactly. 
  • Understands the hospital patient restraint policy. 
  • Understands that patients may be restrained without their permission during imaging procedures to ensure patient safety and image quality. 
  • Verifies DOB, name and exam with patients. 
  • Patients are not left alone during procedure. 
  • Respects and protects the patient's privacy and dignity while undressing/dressing for procedures and by keeping them appropriately covered during procedures. 
  • Warm up equipment before use as needed. 
  • Moves portable equipment with caution to minimize damage. 
  • Carefully explains CT and X-ray procedures to gain patient confidence and cooperation and to reduce patient anxiety. 
  • Keeps patient informed of progress during the procedure. 
  • Remains at the control station during the scan keeping the patient under constant observation. 
  • Wears gloves, masks, eye shield, and gowns when appropriate. 
  • Disposes of sharps, body fluids, contaminated supplies and linens in the proper manner. 
  • Cleans the equipment after each patient.

Requirements

QualificationsEducation: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program. Associate's degree in Radiologic Technology or related field preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Current ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification in Radiography required. ARRT certification in Computed Tomography (CT) required (or must obtain within 12 months of hire). Current Texas Medical Board licensure as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT). Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association required.
Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of experience as a CT Technologist preferred. Experience in a hospital or acute care setting preferred. New graduates with clinical training in CT will be considered.
Skills & Competencies: 

  • Strong knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and CT imaging protocols. 
  • Proficient in operating CT scanners and radiographic imaging equipment. 
  • Working knowledge of RIS (Radiology Information System) and PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). 
  • Ability to perform IV contrast injections and recognize adverse reactions. 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce diagnostic quality images. 
  • Excellent patient care and communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and make sound clinical judgments. 
  • Physical ability to lift, push, and position patients (up to 50 lbs with assistance). 
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
